Space Station Orbiting Over Chicago Could Look Like UFO

According to JJC Planetarium Director Art Maurer, the Chicagoland area can expect a large number of flying saucer sightings starting on May 9 and continuing through the end of the month.

Maurer says the International Space Station (ISS) has had new, large solar panels installed and it now reflects enough sunlight to make the Space Station the third brightest object in the sky after the sun and the moon. It orbits the earth at 17,210 miles per hour and crosses the sky approximately every ninety minutes.

The first crossing will be at 10:04 p.m. on May 9 when it will appear briefly (for 24 seconds) and low in the southwestern sky. On May 10, the ISS will begin its crossing at 8:55 p.m. low in the south-southwest and by 8:59 p.m., it will be 29 degrees above the southeastern horizon.

For more information on the crossings, Maurer says to visit the Web site www.heavens-above.com or e-mail him at amaurer@jjc.edu.

Turn Your Work, Life Experience into College Credit

Attention adults with work and life experience: JJC has developed a program that enables adults with work and life experience to obtain college credit without attending formal classes.

A free informational meeting will discuss all credit for life experience options, including CLEP and proficiency exams, portfolio development, military credit, and credential evaluation. The meeting will be held in room T-1002 from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m., Tuesday, May 19, at the college's Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet.

Portfolio development is one credit for life experience option that gives students the opportunity to assemble a portfolio, which is a written communication presented to the college for credit. A course - Portfolio Development (GSD 103) - has been designed to guide the student through the portfolio process.

The course helps students examine and document experiential learning derived from work, volunteer services, conferences, and workshops. The portfolio can then be submitted to request credit for specific courses offered at the college.

"In the GSD 103 course, we take a look at what we've actually learned through our life experiences and translate that into course credits," Carol Gordon, JJC Portfolio Assessment Coordinator, said.  "It's gratifying to achieve recognition for what you learn on your own."
