JJC Monitors Swine Flu, Recommends Precautionary Measures

JJC is monitoring the swine flu situation and is receiving updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Safety Council and the Will County Department of Public Health.

The CDC defines swine influenza or swine flu as "a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza viruses that causes regular outbreaks in pigs. People do not normally get swine flu, but human infections can and do happen."

The CDC recommends the following practices to help prevent the spread of illnesses such as the flu:

Avoid close contact.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

Stay home when you are sick.
If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.

Cover your mouth and nose.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.

Clean your hands.
Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

Practice other good health habits.
Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

Though JJC has not had any reported cases of swine flu on its campuses, the college performs a comprehensive cleaning regimen on a daily basis. This includes cleaning of all classrooms, laboratories, offices, public areas, and restrooms.

More information on swine flu is available at the Will County Health Department Web site at www.willcountyhealth.org and the Center for Disease Control Web site at www.cdc.gov.

Those bids were: approval of bid for classroom renovations, approval of bid for early childhood center renovations, approval of bid for construction material testing and inspection services.

Fifty-six classrooms will be renovated, including flooring, ceiling, painting, lighting and furniture. Those renovations will begin this weekend.

The Early Childhood Center renovations are part of the overall campus center project. The material testing and inspection is for Phase One projects.

Commencement Ceremony Speakers Announced

The JJC Spring Commencement ceremony will be held Friday, May 15, at 7 p.m. in the A.A. Wills Gymnasium on the Main Campus.

The ceremony will feature student speaker Abigail Atkinson and keynote speaker Dr. Michael Lee, department chair and professor in the Physical Education and Natural Sciences Department, as well as publicly recognize the winners of the J. D. Ross Extraordinary Service Award, R. Dale Evans Sr. and Mohra Gavankar.

Student Speaker Abigail Atkinson of Joliet

AbbeyAtkinsonAbigail Atkinson graduates with an Associate in Science degree with a major in engineering. She plans to continue her education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she will major in aerospace engineering.

Atkinson's dream job is to work at NASA developing the field of space flight exploration. She is a second-generation JJC student, following in the footsteps of both of her parents.

"I've met a lot of new people at JJC and made important connections," Atkinson said. "The Honors Program is great--it's how I've met most of my friends."

Atkinson, of Joliet, tempers her love of the scientific by writing short stories in her spare time. Citing Dean Koontz and Douglas Coupland as her favorite authors, it is no surprise when Atkinson reveals she loves spending time in the JJC library. Perhaps the hobby she's most proud of, though, is that she's a self-taught ukulele player.

Overall, Atkinson said she values JJC because it fosters an atmosphere that promotes academic opportunity and challenge for honors students.

Keynote Speaker Dr. Michael Lee

MLeeDr. Michael Lee has taught human anatomy and physiology and microbiology at the college for the past 21 years, and recently completed 16 years as department chair. He was also a member of the faculty union executive for board 12 years and served as its president for four years.

In addition to teaching, Dr. Lee has served on the Board of Directors for the Wish Upon a Star Foundation in Joliet for 17 years.

Before coming to JJC, Dr. Lee was a doctoral fellow at Ball State University and an instructor at both Ancilla College in Plymouth, Ind., and Loop College in Chicago. He also taught biology at Bloom Trail High School in Chicago Heights, Ill.
