Facility Services Building Design Presented to Board

FacilityServices
Legat Architects rendering of the new Facility Services building. The college is expected to break ground on the $7.9 million project on Sept. 29. The building is projected to be completed in fall 2010.

Legat Architects presented the schematic design of the Facility Services building to trustees at the college's April 14 board meeting.

The approximately 35,017-square-foot building will centralize the college's custodial, grounds, and maintenance areas. These functions are currently housed in the temporary buildings, which will be demolished as part of the Campus Center and parking construction projects.

The building, which is projected to be completed in fall 2010, will also have heated vehicular storage, administrative areas, and the college's shipping and receiving. The college is expected to break ground on the $7.9 million project on Sept. 29, 2009.

"This building complements the original buildings on the Main Campus, and we are pleased with its look and design. It's exciting to see progress on another Master Plan project," said Dr. Gena Proulx, JJC president.

For more information and updated news on the Master Plan, visit www.jjc.edu/info/masterplan.

Online Survey for New College Logo Starts April 20

The JJC community will be invited to participate in an online survey next week to select a new logo for the college.

After a branding workshop in January 2009, the college identified several branding guidelines in order to project a unified message and professional appearance throughout the institution.

As these standards were developed, the need for a new logo that would complement the branding efforts became clear.

The survey, which will present two design concepts, will be open beginning Monday, April 20, and will close at midnight on Thursday, April 23.

Staff, faculty, students, alumni and community members are invited to take the survey, which will be available online at www.jjc.edu/info/logo

3rd Annual Career Shadow Day Largest in Event History

shadowday09

JJC's chapter of the American Association for Women in Community Colleges and Career Services sponsored their 3rd Annual Career Shadow Day in February.

Eighteen 7th and 8th grade female students and three chaperones from Fairmont School District 89 participated in the event.

The students shadowed female JJC employees in over 18 different career areas such as culinary arts, childcare development, human resources, counseling, and psychology.

Following the shadowing experience, the students and their mentors participated in small group discussions and each were invited to provide their discussion groups with small testimonials on their shadowing experiences.

As a special treat to the girls, Vanessa Romero, a graduate of Fairmont School and now an adjunct professor at JJC, provided an inspirational talk on her experiences.

Since the program started, it has doubled the number of students interacting in the shadow experience.

"The reason we have days like these is to bring young women in to a college environment to get them thinking about what they're going to do in high school," Dr. Gena Proulx, JJC president said. "It's all about career building."

JJC volunteers that participated in the event are: Judith Baron, Bev Cavanaugh, Joyce Coleman, Mildred Holmes, Tasha Jones, Emily Marino, Emilie McCallister, Dori Miller, Judy Mitchell, Roxanne Munch, Mark Muszynski, Brenda Roland (president of AAWCC Joliet Chapter), Vanessa Romero, Amy Sims, Tracy Theard, Margot Underwood, Mary Jo Wolfersberger, and Brenda Zeborowski.

So far, 152 employees have participated in the event, with 33 new gifts given. Eighty-six of these participants gave $100 or more, making them members of the Presidents Club.

Last year's campaign received over $32,000 in donations, and 197 employees participated in the event, and the college hopes to reach the goal of 100 percent employee participation.
