Wunderlich, Klen Secure Seats on JJC Board
 
WunderlichRobert Wunderlich and Susan Marie Klen were the top vote getters in an eight-person race for two six-year terms on the JJC Board of Trustees in the April 7 consolidated election.
 
Wunderlich, an incumbent, has served 32 years on the JJC board and currently serves as board chairman. Klen will replace Susan Block, who chose not to run for reelection. 
 
KlenJJC has 465 precincts in Will, Grundy, Livingston, LaSalle, Cook, Kankakee, and Kendall Counties.
 
Wunderlich, of Joliet, garnered 25,540 votes while Klen, also of Joliet, secured the second seat with 18,671 votes.

JJC to Host Informational Session on GI Bill Revisions

 
The Illinois Department of Veteran Affairs will hold an informational session on the new version of the GI Bill from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, at the JJC Main Campus.
 
Tiffany Perry, a representative from the Illinois Department of Veteran Affairs, will lead the session and take questions regarding the Post 9/11 GI Bill, which goes into effect August 1, 2009.
 
Sponsored by the JJC Financial Aid/Veterans Office, the event will be held in the T-Building Conference Center.

Wellness Fair Continues Through Thursday 
 
The 14th Annual Wellness Fair, an event designed to discuss different aspects of nutritional, social and environmental wellness, will be held through Thursday, April 9, on the Main Campus.
 
The fair is sponsored by the Office of Student Activities and Holistic Wellness. 
 
Thursday's schedule is as follows:
 
  • 10 a.m. - Active shooter video and discussion presented by Chief Pete Comanda, JJC Campus Police Department
  • 11 a.m. - Ice Skating and Fitness, presented by Dan Hinz, Joliet Park District
  • Noon - Art therapy, presented by Diannaha Tielbur, Office of Student Activities and Holistic Wellness 
  • 1 p.m. - Take the Stress Out of Job Searching, presented by Mary Jo Wolfersberger, director of JJC Career Services
  • 2 p.m. - Aromatherapy, presented by Raymond Miller, Wellness and Massage Training Institute

JJC Juried Art Show April 13 through May 8
 
The JJC Art Students' 2009 Juried Exhibition will open April 13 in the Laura A. Sprague Art Gallery on the Main Campus.
  
Featuring the work of 30 JJC art students, the exhibit will run through May 8. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
 
This year's juror Mark Swain, professor of art at Lewis University, chose the final 47 works for the annual exhibit from nearly 230 submissions.
 
The public is invited to attend the Exhibition Critique and Presentation of Awards held in the JJC Fine Arts Theatre on Thursday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m. A public reception will be held following the awards ceremony.
 
JJC students who were featured in the exhibit are as follows:

JJC To Hold Second Religious Diversity Forum
 
JJC will host the Second Religious Diversity Forum on Tuesday, April 28, at the Main Campus.
 
The forum will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the T-Building Conference Center. The event includes a complimentary lunch. 
 
The event will feature members from Christian Orthodox, Hinduism, Muslim Student Association, Pagan/Wiccan Club, Eckankar, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, Catholic Campus Ministry, and Joliet Jewish Congregation. The forum will address issues of evolution vs. creationism.

JJC to Host State Precision Machining Competition
 
JJC will host the Skills/USA Illinois State Precision Machining Competition on Saturday, April 18, at the Main Campus.
 
The Skills/USA Precision Machining Competition tests student competitors on their machining skills, which include manual milling, manual lathe, bench working, inspection, blueprint reading and computer numerical control.
 
From 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., 20 contestants from secondary and post-secondary schools across the state will compete in this event. First place winners will advance to the national competition in Kansas City this summer.
 
The college will also host a machine orientation/open house the night before the competition on Friday, April 17, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the C-Building.
 
SkillsUSA a national organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations, including health occupations. SkillsUSA was formerly known as VICA (the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America).

Donate Items to Support Project Graduation
 
JJC's Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society will host Project Graduation, an on-going international campaign project to help collect food and books for those in need, starting Wednesday, April 15, at the Main Campus.
 
Project Graduation's monthlong mission during college commencement season is to help battle social issues of hunger and low literacy skills by collecting non-perishable food items and books for needy recipients, donated through community relief agencies and literacy organizations.
 
Collection boxes will be in various locations throughout the campus for students and staff to donate non-perishable food items or gently used books to help those in need. A collection box for donations will also be present at the graduation ceremony for JJC students on May 15.
 
The honor society has participated in this project for several years, successfully donating hundreds of non-perishable foods and books to different organizations such as Morning Star Mission in Joliet, and Will County's Reach Out and Read program.

Annual Spring Scholarship Gala April 24
 
The JJC Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Department will present the Annual Spring Scholarship Gala on Friday, April 24, at the Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet.
 
From 6:30 to 10 p.m., guests will enjoy an evening of fine dining, distinctive desserts and exquisite wine while celebrating the many scholarship recipients.  The event will be held in the JJC Bridge/cafeteria area.
 
Tickets are limited and going fast. They are $95 per person and may be reserved by calling ext. 2255.

KestelBranchaw* Dennis Haynes, vice president of  academic affairs; Jane Cartwright, instructional design specialist; Colleen Kestel-Branchaw (right), professor of  nursing; and Bill Yarrow, iCampus faculty coordinator and professor of English, presented at the Innovations 2009 Conference in Reno, Nev. on March 16. The title of the panel presentation was "Creating a Professional Development Faculty Cohort: One College's Story."
 
* Congratulations to Faculty Chef Tim Bucci, who was awarded the American Culinary Federation's Culinary Educator of the Year for the central U.S.
 
* Congratulations to Faculty Chef Kyle Richardson, who took second place overall at the Illinois Pork Producer's Taste of Elegance Competition that featured eight top chefs from the Chicagoland area.
 
* Congratulations to Faulty Chef Andy Chlebana, who earned third place overall in the New York Restaurant Show against 13 of the top pastry chefs in the nation.
 
* Congratulations to Susan Paddock, dean of enrollment management, who has been elected to the executive committee of the Illinois chapter of the American Council on Education (ACE) Network of Women in Higher Education for a three-year term.
 
DavidSeward* Congratulations to David Seward, director of financial aid, who has been awarded the Awards for Excellence grant in the amount of $5,000 to set up a Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) module and training session. Datatel's SAP module, in conjunction with Colleague, will be used to calculate academic progress for JJC students. The implementation of this module will increase the utilization of technology to advance teaching and learning, expand online and alternative delivery methods, and enable effective administrative and support services.
