Despite a steady downpour, JJC administrators and community members took part in a ceremonial groundbreaking Tuesday, March 31, for the college's new Greenhouse Facility on the Main Campus. The new Greenhouse Facility, the first of many buildings to be constructed as part of the college's $220 million master plan, aspires to be one of the first greenhouses in the nation to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - New Construction (LEED-NC) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The ceremony was held at the future site of the facility, which is located at the old farmstead near the corner of Houbolt Road and the exit road of Main Campus. "Putting shovels into the ground today is more than just a symbolic gesture of the beginning of the Greenhouse Facility project," Dr. Gena Proulx, JJC president, said. "It is also a reaffirmation of our commitment to teaching and learning, which has been a hallmark of JJC for the past 108 years, and will continue to guide us for the next 100 years." 1st Annual Dollars for Scholars 5K Run/Walk May 2
JJC will host the 1st Annual Dollars for Scholars 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, May 2, to raise money for student scholarships. The event, which begins at 9 a.m., will be held on JJC's Main Campus.
The route is a certified flat loop pavement course primarily on the college's scenic campus. Packet pick-up and race day registration will be from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. on May 2. Participants should park in South Lot 2 and enter the F-Building for registration and restrooms. There are three ways to register for the race: online registration, mail-in registration or race-day registration. The entry fee to participate before April 24 is $20 per person. Any entries after the pre- registration date of April 24 is $25 per person.
Members of the campus community are encouraged to sponsor a student(s) for the 5K run/walk by donating the entry fee, said Dr. Betsy Oudenhoven, vice president of student development.
Those who would like to sponsor a specific student should have the student fill out the necessary race information with a notation that they will be providing payment.
Oudenhoven added that members of the campus community can also make a donation and the Office of Student Development will connect it with a student.
To provide payment for either option, contact Amanda Quinn at ext. 6690 or aquinn@jjc.edu. JJC is a collegiate partner of Dollars for Scholars. All funds raised will benefit JJC students through the Dollars for Scholars program. Illinois Dollars for Scholars is a program of Scholarship America. One of the program's goals is to encourage schools and community groups to raise money to help local students reach and achieve their educational goals. To register for the race online, visit www.jjc.edu/info/5k.

U of C Researcher to Discuss Cosmic Explosions, Aftermath
A senior research associate in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago will give a public talk on the history of cosmic explosions and their impacts on Tuesday, April 7, from 6 to 7 p.m. on the Main Campus. Vikram Dwarkadas, Ph.D., will give his talk called "Cosmic Explosions and their Aftermath" in D-2001.
In this discussion, Dwarkadas will explore the remarkable history of cataclysmic explosions and the result of the explosions that have fascinated mankind for millennia. These supernova explosions have even been recorded a thousand years ago as the sudden appearance of a bright star in the sky. Stars greater than about eight times the mass of our sun end their lives in cataclysmic explosions, releasing extremely large amounts of material at very high energies. It has only been in the last several decades that astronomers have begun to understand these explosions. Admission is free and refreshments will be available beginning at 5:45 p.m. For more information, contact Noella D'Cruz at ext. 2572 or e-mail ndcruz@jjc.edu.
