U of C Researcher to Discuss Cosmic Explosions, Aftermath
A senior research associate in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago will give a public talk on the history of cosmic explosions and their impacts on Tuesday, April 7, from 6 to 7 p.m. on the Main Campus. Vikram Dwarkadas, Ph.D., will give his talk called "Cosmic Explosions and their Aftermath" in D-2001.
In this discussion, Dwarkadas will explore the remarkable history of cataclysmic explosions and the result of the explosions that have fascinated mankind for millennia. These supernova explosions have even been recorded a thousand years ago as the sudden appearance of a bright star in the sky. Stars greater than about eight times the mass of our sun end their lives in cataclysmic explosions, releasing extremely large amounts of material at very high energies. It has only been in the last several decades that astronomers have begun to understand these explosions. Admission is free and refreshments will be available beginning at 5:45 p.m. For more information, contact Noella D'Cruz at ext. 2572 or e-mail ndcruz@jjc.edu.
