New Veteran Workforce Center Opens at JJC

JJC Workforce Development has announced the opening of its new Veteran Workforce Center, which will assist military veterans with their transition into civilian occupations, as well as provide educational training.

Pvanderhyden"Veterans making the transition back to civilian life are faced with not only having to learn a new way of life, but also how to find employment and enter the workforce in an economy that has seen better days," Paige Vanderhyden (right), JJC workforce services manager, said.

"As troops return to the U.S. and become inactive, there will be a tremendous increase in veterans needing to assimilate into civilian life and civilian jobs. By providing a resource place like the JJC Veteran Workforce Center, veterans can receive the assistance they need in making this transition."

Located at the college's City Center Campus, the Veteran Workforce Center will offer free workshops, in partnership with JJC Financial Aid, on Wednesdays beginning in March on veteran education benefits and career assessment.

Interior Design Student Earns 2nd Place in National Contest

NKBA rendering
Above is JJC interior design student Michelle Hamilton's winning bathroom design for the National Kitchen and Bath Association's (NKBA) recent 2008/2009 Student Design Competition.

Joliet Junior College interior design student Michelle Hamilton was among 10 winners of the National Kitchen and Bath Association's (NKBA) recent 2008/2009 Student Design Competition.

Hamilton, of Coal City, won second place for her bathroom design and a $1,500 scholarship. Hamilton's design was chosen from hundreds of entries.

This year's NKBA competition challenged student designers to create a functional and adaptable kitchen and bathroom for active senior citizens in their home on the shores of North Carolina. The students' work had to meet the specific needs of the homeowners, which included the use of natural and durable materials.

"The award is an honor and a significant achievement for Michelle," Oksana Alfredson, JJC interior design instructor, said. "This year, there were 192 entries from 35 schools. The requirement level is very high."

Hamilton, along with the other nine winners, will be honored at the NKBA Design Competition Awards Luncheon on May 1, at the Kitchen/Bath Industry Show held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.

According to Alfredson, this is the first time JJC has participated in the annual NKBA competition. The NKBA, Alfredson said, sets industry standards in kitchen and bathroom design.
