"Books to Movies" - check out "American Splendor," "Antwone Fisher," "Shawshank Redemption," "Girl, Interrupted," "Deliverance," and many more as the library has assembled notable titles that have been transformed onto film.  
 
"Four Hundred Years of the Telescope" - Working with Dr. Noella D'Cruz, professor of astronomy, the library has assembled materials to enjoy learning more about astronomy and various telescopes. 
 
"Martin Luther King Jr." - many titles (books and movies) to choose from depicting the life of legendary civil rights leader. Also included is archival liner notes by Ralph David Abernathy.

King to be Inducted into Nat'l Hall of Fame
 
 
WayneKingJoliet Junior College Head Baseball Coach Wayne King received one of his profession's highest honors this month when he was publicly named to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Baseball Hall of Fame.  
 
King will be inducted with three other colleagues from across the country at the 2009 NJCAA Division I World Series Banquet on May 22 in Grand Junction, Colo. 
 
During his 22 year tenure at JJC, King has established one of the most successful Division III baseball programs in the NJCAA.  
 
Under King, JJC has won 12 Region 4 titles and two national championships, including the 2008 World Series title. King's 762 collegiate career wins are the most in school history at JJC. 
 
The 2008 JJC baseball team broke the school record for wins, finishing with a 49-11 overall record, while four players from that team were also selected in the Major League Baseball (MLB) Amateur Draft. 
 
This year marks King's 23rd at the helm of the baseball program at JJC. During that time, 90 percent of his student athletes have transferred to four-year schools.

In other career achievements, King has been named an NJCAA and American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division III Coach of the Year twice, NJCAA District Coach of the Year eight times, and Region 4 Coach of the Year 11 times.

In addition to numerous other achievements, the Pitch and Hit Club of Chicago named King Junior College Coach of the Year three times.

13th Annual JJC Pow Wow Slated for March 14 
 
 
JJCPowWowJJC will present its 13th annual Pow Wow on Saturday, March 14, from noon to 9 p.m. on the Main Campus. 
 
The daylong activities will include Native American dancing and music along with a variety of vendors exhibiting and selling their crafts. 
 
Native American food will also be available in the cafeteria from noon to 6 p.m.
 
The Pow Wow is sponsored by the JJC Native American Club and the Office of Student Activities, in cooperation with the American Indian Center of Chicago and attracts an average of 2,500 people.
 
Grand Entries are slated for 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and students.

Math Department to Host
Invitational on March 11 
 
 
JJC's Invitational Math Contest, a tradition on campus for over 20 years, will be held on Wednesday, March 11, from 3 to 7 p.m. on the Main Campus.
 
The contest brings together over 500 students from 19 local high schools to compete in written, oral and calculator competitions.
 
Over 400 volunteer hours were donated last year to make the competition possible. The JJC Math Department writes and judges the contest.
 
Last year, Seneca High School won the Class A schools division; Plainfield North won the Class 2A schools division; and Lincoln-Way East won the Class 3A schools division.
 
Schools participating are Dwight, Plainfield South, Lincoln-Way North, Minooka, Wilmington, Joliet Township, and Plainfield East, all in the Class A division; schools in the Class 2A division are Coal City, Morris, Plainfield North, Plainfield Central, Seneca, and Providence; schools participating in the Class 3A Division are Lemont, Lincoln-Way Central, Joliet Catholic, Lincoln-Way East, Bolingbrook, and Reed Custer.

JJC Non-Fiction Book Club Meetings and Book List
 
 
The new JJC Non-Fiction Book Club will meet on Friday afternoons beginning at 4:30 p.m.
 
The following is a list of the selected titles and meeting dates: 
 
March 6: "The Rise of the Creative Class"
 
April 3: "Sick: The Untold Story of America's Health Care Crisis"
 
May 1: "Freakonomics"
 
June 12: "Our Space: Resisting the Corporate Control of Culture"
 
July 10: "Filth: Dirt, Disgust and Modern Life"
 
Involvement in the book club does not have to be inclusive. Those interested are more than welcome to pick and choose dates that fit their calendar.

Severe Weather Spotter Training Offered in March
 
Severe weather spotter training instructed by the National Weather Service will be offered on the following dates in the following locations:
 
Wednesday, March 11, Shorewood Village Hall Board Room, 10 a.m. 
 
Tuesday, March 17, New Lenox Village Hall Community Room 10 a.m.
 
Tuesday, March 17, Crete Township Hall, 7 p.m.
Wednesday, March 18, Plainfield Law Enforcement Center, 7 p.m.

The Severe Weather Spotter Training is a two-hour, basic course in recognizing and identifying severe storms capable of producing damaging winds, tornadoes, heavy rain, and hail.

Course topics also include procedures for reporting severe weather to appropriate agencies so warnings may be issued to the public. There is no cost to attend one of these sessions. Seating is limited.Call (815)-740-8351 to reserve a space.

Success Story Series to Feature Four JJC Professors
 
 
The next JJC Success Story Series on Thursday, March 12, will feature four JJC English professors.
 
The series, a sequence of presentations designed to introduce students to personal success stories of JJC alumni who are leaders in the community and/or their field, will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on the Main Campus and offer a complimentary lunch.
 
The professors to be featured are:
 
JBaskinDr. James Baskin. Dr. James Baskin is a faculty member of the English and World Languages Department at JJC, where he teaches composition and literature. He holds an associate degree from JJC, a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), a law degree from Northwestern University, a master's degree in English from UIC, and a Ph.D. in English from UIC.
 
VBouieVirginia Bouie. Virginia Bouie is an assistant professor of English in the English and World Languages Department at JJC. She earned an associate degree from JJC, a bachelor's degree from Northern Illinois University and a master's degree in English from Governors State University. She also serves as the adviser for JJC's Totally Committed Club.
 
MHainzingerMichael Hainzinger. Michael Hainzinger is an instructor in the English and World Languages Department at JJC, where he teaches English as a Second Language classes. He earned a bachelor's degree in English at the University of Illinois and a master's degree in English at Governors State University. After graduating from U of I, he taught English in Taiwan for two years. 
 
SMurphyStacey Murphy. Stacey Santoro-Murphy teaches composition and literature in the English and World Languages Department at JJC. She holds degrees from JJC and Eastern Illinois University, and recently completed coursework toward a doctoral degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Comedy Shrine of Naperville to Perform at JJC March 7
 
The Comedy Shrine Improvisational Troupe of Naperville will perform at the 6th Annual Joliet Junior College Alumni Comedy Night on Saturday, March 7, in the Fine Arts Theatre on the Main Campus.
 
An hors d'oeuvres reception will take place from 6 to 7 p.m.  The show will begin at 7 p.m. General admission is $25. Students, staff and senior (60+) tickets are $20. The ticket price includes the hors d'oeuvres reception.
