Musica Viva Concert Series for Brass and Organ Feb. 15

Experience the power and splendor of music when the Musica Viva Series of Joliet Junior College presents "A Celebration of Magnificent Music for Brass and Organ," on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 3 p.m. at the historic St. Joseph Catholic Church, 416 N. Chicago Street in downtown Joliet.

Music selected from four centuries of literature for brass ensemble and pipe organ will be performed in this one-hour concert by the JJC Brass Quintet, directed by JJC Fine Arts Professor Charles Morgan, and JJC Fine Arts Professor Philip Spencer, organist.

The program will include classical favorites from composers of the Renaissance and Baroque eras, some interesting twentieth-century works, and as well as some lighter fare. St. Joseph Church has one of Joliet's largest and finest pipe organs housed in a magnificent acoustical setting perfect for such a concert of brass and organ music.

Charles Morgan, assistant professor of music and music coordinator, is also the director of bands at JJC.  He received an associate of arts degree from JJC, a bachelor of music from Northern Illinois University, and a master of music education from VanderCook College of Music.

Philip Spencer, professor of music, is the director of choral and vocal music at JJC.  He received a bachelor of music degree from Wittenberg University, a master of music degree from the Yale University School of Music, completed one academic year of church music study in Berlin, Germany, and has done doctoral study in choral conducting and organ at the University of Iowa.

Bonnie Johansen-Werner, adjunct faculty at the college, will also accompany the ensemble on the organ.  The members of the Joliet Junior College Brass Quintet are Lauren LeMahieu, trumpet; Jeff McMillin, trumpet; Collette LeMahieu, french horn; Charles Morgan, trombone/conductor; and John Cryder, tuba.

The concert is free and open to the public.  For more information, call the JJC Fine Arts Department at (815) 280-2223.

Workforce Staff Presents at National AACC Conference

AACCpresentation
From left to right: Kelly Lapetino, JJC Workforce Development;
Sandra Mol, JJC Workforce Development; Heather Ellison, St. Louis Community College, Mo.; Mary Sue Vickers, Director, Plus 50 Initiative, AACC, Washington, DC.

JJC Workforce Development staff Sandra Mol and Kelly Lapetino led a forum at the American Association of Community Colleges' Workforce Development Institute in Newport Beach, Calif. in January.

The forum covered the AACC's Plus 50 Initiative, including how JJC and St. Louis Community College are implementing promising practices to reach out to and serve plus 50 learners.

According to Lapetino, with advances in health care and increasing life spans, adults over 50 are redefining the word retirement. The baby boomers, she said, representing close to 77 million Americans, will have tremendous impact on the future workplace.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projections of labor force participation show the largest increases between 2006 and 2016 will be in the 55 and over age groups. Talented career changers and experienced plus 50 workers can benefit from training, skill updating, and retraining through their local community college.
