Grundy YPN Member Wins State Workforce Award
In less than two years, Jherad Holcomb transformed his life.
With diligence, commitment and the help of the Young Professionals Network (YPN) at the JJC Grundy County Center, Holcomb went from an unemployed high school dropout with a drug dependency problem to a first generation college student.
Those steps ultimately earned him the Individual Achievement Award at the Annual Illinois Workforce Development Conference held in Springfield this fall. Holcomb is the first winner of this award from Grundy County.

JJC Women's Basketball Team Sings at Breakfast
The JJC women's basketball team at the Winter Wonderland Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 13.
The women's basketball team volunteered at the Annual Winter Wonderland Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 13, held at the Harvey Brooks Foundation in Joliet.
The team sang Christmas carols at the event before their game at Parkland College. The event attracted over 500 children, and with the help of the local Mr. Charity Foundation, each child was provided with a toy.
The Harvey Brooks Foundation is a non-profit organization that works to boost community development and provide programs and services for positive youth development.

Campus Construction Over Winter Break Starts Dec. 22
The following work will be going on during winter break. Work on these projects will begin on Monday, Dec. 22, and will be ongoing through winter break.
- Cafeteria shades installation: motorized roller shades will be installed on the window walls of the cafeteria. These shades will help reduce the heat gain from the sun and reduce cooling needs.
- Culinary/hospitality office remodel in J-0012 and J-0013A, nursing classroom remodel in C-2012: office space is at a premium on campus and these small renovations will provide much needed space for culinary arts and nursing.

The JJC Bookstore will have special and extended hours, along with special book buyback hours.

New Year's Eve Bash at the Renaissance Center
Usher in 2009 at the Renaissance Center's New Year's Eve Bash.
Beginning at 7:30 p.m., enjoy live piano music, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres in the Renaissance Center foyer before heading upstairs to a dinner featuring roasted tomato bisque soup, mixed green salad, prime rib or pan-seared orange roughy, double-baked potato, vegetable medley, homemade rolls, and the Renaissance Center chocolate fountain.
The evening will continue with dancing and entertainment, followed by a champagne toast at midnight.
Limousine service is available by calling One Sweet Dream Valet and Limousine Service at (866) 338-3821.
Ticket cost is $75 per person. A group rate is available for tables of 10 or more. Tickets will be entered for numerous chances to win prizes throughout the evening.
Deadline to purchase tickets is today.

Faculty, Staff Recognition
* The Counseling Department's minority mentoring program, Project Success, was given an Outstanding Multicultural Counseling Program Award from the Illinois Association for Multicultural Counseling in November. This organization is an affiliate of the Illinois Counseling Association and the American Counseling Association. Mildred Holmes, department chair, and Teresa Lozano, counselor, are coordinators of the program.
 * Congratulations to the faculty who have nominated for the 2008 National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence Awards for teaching excellence: Sami Nordmark (right), Colleen Kestel-Branchaw, Dr. Judy Kachel, Gwendolyn Beam, Kathleen Wolz (Nursing & Allied Health); Terry O'Neil (Business); Kyle Richardson (Culinary Arts); and Joe Milosevich (Fine Arts).
* Congratulations to Sandy Mol, director of workforce development, on being elected president-elect of the Illinois Council of Community College Administrators at the 2008 ICCCA Fall Conference in November.
 * Congratulations to Jacquelyn Klika (right), manager of the Student Accommodations and Resources and Academic Skills Center, on being appointed to serve on the Center for Independent Living Board.
