JJC Men's Basketball Ranked First in the Nation

The 2008-2009 men's basketball team. The team is currently ranked first in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III men's basketball poll with a 7-0 record.
 
 
LeAaron PierceFor the second week in a row, the JJC men's basketball team remains in the top spot of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III men's basketball poll.
 
The Wolves (7-0 overall) have averaged 79.8 points per game and have held their opponents to 65.4 points per game. They rank seventh in team 3-point field goal percentage with 47.8 percent.
 
Joe KuhnFormer Joliet Township graduate LeAaron Pierce (top) leads the Wolves in scoring with 16.4 points per game and averages 3.1 assists per game. In just seven games, Pierce has made 27 3-point field goals. First team pre-season All-American Teray Whisby has a double-double average with 12.7 points per game and 11.2 rebounds per game.
 
Head Coach Joe Kuhn (bottom) is in his twelfth season at JJC and has amassed a 245-125 overall coaching record at the college. Assistant basketball coaches are Keith Kinzler, Zach Pucel and Erik Walton.


 
 
Commencement Keynote, Student Speaker Announced
Ceremony will be held Dec. 19 in the Main Campus Gym
 
 
AriasProfessor and International Education Coordinator Dr. Berta Arias will deliver the keynote address at the December 2008 commencement ceremony on Friday, Dec. 19.
 
Arias is a professor and international education coordinator in the English and World Languages Department at JJC. 
 
She teaches Spanish and has a working knowledge of Italian and Portuguese, and developed and continues to coordinate eight critical languages offered at the college, including Arabic and Chinese. 
 
Arias has written and received three major U.S. Department of Education grants to enhance international education and world languages, totaling over $350,000 in federal dollars for the college.

Board of Education Site Features McGreal in Webcast
 
McGrealsThe Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has produced two videos featuring Chef Michael McGreal and his wife Brigitta to help high schools that are considering a remodel of their culinary/foods labs.
 
To see the video, visit www.ilcte.org and click on the webcasts tab on the top of the page. The videos are the first two listed titled Residential and Commercial Kitchens. 

McGreal is department chair of the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Department and Brigitta is department chair of Career and Technical Education and a culinary arts instructor at Bolingbrook High School.

The videos provide examples of layout and equipment needs for both styles of modern high school teaching kitchens as well as differences between residential and commercial teaching kitchens. 
 
 
 
 
Annual College Holiday Reception Dec. 16
 
The Administrative Council will host the college's Annual Holiday Reception on Tuesday, Dec. 16, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in J-0006 on the Main Campus.
 
Refreshments will be served and door prizes created by JJC floral design students will be given out.

New Year's Eve Bash at the Renaissance Center
 
 
Usher in 2009 at the Renaissance Center's New Year's Eve Bash. 
 
Beginning at 7:30 p.m., enjoy live piano music, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres in the Renaissance Center foyer before heading upstairs to a dinner featuring roasted tomato bisque soup, mixed green salad, prime rib or pan-seared orange roughy, double-baked potato, vegetable medley, homemade rolls, and the Renaissance Center chocolate fountain.
 
The evening will continue with dancing and entertainment, followed by a champagne toast at midnight. 

Limousine service is available by calling One Sweet Dream Valet and Limousine Service at (866) 338-3821.
 
Ticket cost is $75 per person. A group rate is available for tables of 10 or more. Tickets will be entered for numerous chances to win prizes throughout the evening.
 
Deadline to purchase tickets is Dec. 17.

New Office, Classroom Supplies Contract in '09
 
JJC will begin a new office and classroom supplies contract with Office Depot beginning in January.
 
Office Depot carries over 15,000 items online and in their store; both which will be available to faculty and staff. This contract will streamline the college's supply ordering process as well as provide substantial cost-savings to departments and offices across campus.
 
The new contract will also offer services that include free desktop delivery to all campuses, an award-winning online ordering system, and a broad selection of office and classroom products.
More information about this new system and training opportunities will follow in the coming month.

Faculty, Staff Recognition

 
*   Dr. Patricia Kupina, professor in the Nursing and Allied Health Department, successfully passed the Lactation Specialist Certification exam administered by the national group, Lactation Education Consultants. The certification will enhance Kupina's teaching in the maternal child nursing area.
