Adler Astronomer to Give Talk on Meteorites Dec. 3

MarkHammergrenAn astronomer from the Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum in Chicago will be on the Main Campus on Wednesday, Dec. 3, from 6 to 7 p.m. to give a public talk on the history of meteorites and their impacts.

Mark Hammergren, Ph.D., will give his talk, "The Heavens as Iron, the Earth as Brass: A Brief History of Meteorites and their Impacts" in the D-Building in room 2001.

In this discussion, Dr. Hammergren will explore the remarkable history of meteorites and what they can tell us about our own origins.

Since prehistory, people have seen and have revered these mysterious objects in many different ways. From sacred icons from the heavens to terrible destroyers of life, from humanity's first source of iron for metal tools to their current regard as important records of the formation of the solar system, meteorites have always held a special place in popular and scientific culture.

Earn College Credit For What You Already Know

Attention adults with work and life experience: JJC has developed a program that enables adults with work and life experience to obtain college credit without attending formal classes.

A free informational meeting will discuss all credit for life experience options, including CLEP and proficiency exams, portfolio development, military credit, and credential evaluation.

The meeting will be held in room T-1002 beginning at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 3, at the college's Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet.

Portfolio development is one credit for life experience option that gives students the opportunity to assemble a portfolio, which is a written communication presented to the college for credit. A course - Portfolio Development (GSD 103) - has been designed to guide the student through the portfolio process.

The course helps students examine and document experiential learning derived from work, volunteer services, conferences, and workshops. The portfolio can then be submitted to request credit for specific courses offered at the college.

For more information, call (815) 280-2671, or visit the JJC Web site at www.jjc.edu/priorlearning.
