JJC to Present Biloxi Blues
 
Biloxi Blues 
Male cast members are shown during rehearsal on the set of Biloxi Blues, which runs Nov. 13-16 in the Fine Arts Theatre. 
 
The Fine Arts Department will present "Biloxi Blues" beginning this Thursday, Nov. 13, through Saturday, Nov. 15, at 8 p.m. and on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre on the Main Campus.
 
"Biloxi Blues," written by Neil Simon, is the 1985 Tony Award-winning play that follows young army recruit, Eugene Morris Jerome, as he experiences boot camp in 1943 in Biloxi, Miss. In this comedy, Eugene and five other enlisted men encounter a demanding drill sergeant, attempts to survive army "food," experience lust and love, and become adults.

Bookstore to Host Annual Holiday Happenings Event
 
The JJC Bookstore will host its annual Holiday Happenings event on Thursday, Nov. 20, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Bookstore on the Main Campus. 
 
Many holiday items will be on sale, including other specially-priced merchandise. A food and dip sampling will be held at the Bookstore entrance throughout the event. Door prize drawings will be held with no purchase necessary--those chosen don't need to be present to win.

Jewelry Holiday Sale Nov. 20
 
The JJC metalsmithing class will host the annual Handcrafted Jewelry Holiday Sale on Thursday, Nov. 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the cafeteria on the Main Campus.
 
The class will exhibit and sell their handcrafted earrings, pins, rings, bolos, bracelets, necklaces, beads, and ornaments in gold, silver, copper, brass, niobium, glass, and semi-precious stones.

Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra
The Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra will present its concert on Sunday, Nov. 23, at 4 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre on the Main Campus.

Thanksgiving Buffet Nov. 20
 
The JJC Thanksgiving Buffet will be held on Thursday, Nov. 20, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the cafeteria on the Main Campus.
 
Cost of the buffet is $9 per person. Call ext. 2832 for reservations.
 
The menu includes:
 
  • Squash soup
  • Tossed salad
  • Fresh roasted turkey
  • Savory dressing
  • Giblet gravy
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Candied sweet potatoes
  • Green bean casserole

Native American Heritage Events at JJC this Month
 
NAHeritage08The JJC Native American Club and the Office of Student Activities will sponsor events in November in honor of Native American Heritage Month. The schedule of events is as follows:
 
Wednesday, Nov. 19, 4 to 6 p.m.: Beading workshop with Phyllis Bearskin (learn how to bead Native American style) Participants will make a beaded pouch, materials supplied but space is limited so please contact Fred Harris for reservations. On the Main Campus Bridge.
 
Thursday, Nov. 20, noon to 2 p.m.: Lunch and Learn with Larry Lockwood (drumming and storytelling). In J-0006.
 
Monday, Nov. 24, noon to 2 p.m.: Lunch and Learn with Sapphira Scott (Navajo jewelry-making). On the Main Campus Bridge.

Annual Epicurean Festival of Food and Wine Nov. 21

The Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Department is holding their 8th Annual Epicurean Festival of Food and Wine on Friday, Nov. 21,  from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Main Campus cafeteria.
 
There will be different stations to sample both exquisite food and fine wine. A silent auction will be held with great items to bid on, along with the highlight of the evening--a live auction. Bid on a dinner for yourself and friends with a private chef or a wine tasting evening.
 
Ticket price is $60 per person. Tickets are available by calling Dori Miller at (815) 280-2255.
 
All proceeds from the event and auctions will go towards the Culinary Arts Education Fund.
 

 
 
Fifth Annual Bridal Expo and Fashion Show Nov. 23 
 
The Renaissance Center team is partnering with JJC hospitality and culinary arts students for the 5th Annual Bridal Expo and Fashion Show on Nov. 23.
 
The event will run from noon to 4 p.m. As part of the students' learning experience, they will job shadow Susan Stockwell, Renaissance Center event planner, to learn how to coordinate, setup and design the show. 

The Renaissance Center will present the show in conjunction with White Carriage Bridal Shop, Kosack's, Black Tie & Formal Wear, Mario Tricoci Hair Salon and Hyper Entertainment. 
 
Holiday Pastries Available for Order Through Nov. 14
 
The JJC Food Service/Culinary Arts Holiday Pastry Shop will offer an assortment of pastries available to order through Nov. 14.
 
Pastries offered are:
 
Fruitcake (two lbs) for $11
Christmas stollen (two lbs) for $11
Apple strudel (three lbs) for $8
Cherry strudel (three lbs) for $8
Christmas cookies (one lbs) for $7
 
Orders must be submitted to the JJC Cafeteria and paid in full by Friday, Nov. 14.

Faculty, Staff Awards and Recognition

 

Congratulations to retired physics faculty member Curt Hieggelke, who has been named a 2009 Excellence in Physics Education Award Recipient for leadership in introducing physicists in two-year colleges to new instructional methods, in developing new materials based on physics education research, and in fostering faculty networking, particularly in two-year colleges by the American Physical Society. He'll receive the award at the APS April 2009 meeting held May 2-5 in Denver, Colo. at a special ceremonial session.
 
*  Congratulations to retired horticulture faculty member Roger Ross, who was inducted into this year's Project Pride of Joliet and Will County Hall of Pride. A ceremony will be held today, Nov. 12, to honor Ross and other inductees. Over 100 Joliet area residents have joined the Hall of Pride since it began in 1987. The Hall located at the Main Branch Joliet Public Library honors men and women who have made an impact on Joliet area and its citizens.
