GreenSpeak
Ever wonder whether you should invest in a hybrid car or modify your home to conserve more energy?
Learn about alternative forms of energy and how to save money on your electric bill at the next Brown Bag Lecture, GreenSpeak, on Oct. 28, with Technical Professor John Koepke.
GreenSpeak will be held in J-0006 beginning at noon.
* For every five psi that your tires are under-inflated, your mpg decreases by about 1.5 percent.
* Replacing a clogged air filter can improve gas mileage by as much as 10 percent.

Get Connected with New College Magazine
In just a few weeks, JJC will debut its first magazine, Connections, a publication for alumni and friends of the college.
The magazine's name represents the importance of staying in touch with the people and organizations that make an impact on our lives.
The relationships between JJC, its alumni and the community are perfect examples of meaningful connections that change lives and leave a lasting impression. The purpose of this magazine is to strengthen those connections. By sharing these stories, we hope your bond to JJC will grow stronger.

Teaching seminars held in conjunction with fair
The JJC Adjunct Faculty Job Fair will be held Thursday, Oct. 23, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Main Campus cafeteria.
Adjunct positions are available in a variety of subject areas at the Main Campus, JJC extended campuses and satellite locations.
Attend the fair and learn about the benefits of being an instructor at the college, meet with JJC department chairs, and learn about flexible options such as evening, weekend and online classes.
A master's degree in the subject area is required for teaching general education courses. Those interested should bring several copies of their resume.

New Hospitality Degree in Special Event Planning
Meeting and special event degree prompted by continued industry growth and student interest
The continued growth of the multi-billion dollar hospitality industry, along with increased student interest, has prompted Joliet Junior College to add a new degree program to its Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Department.
The new meeting and special event planning degree is a specialized segment of broader hospitality studies and prepares students for positions such as meeting coordinator, event manager, event coordinator, wedding planner, training director, trade show manager, incentive travel manager, and corporate travel manager.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the hospitality industry is predicted to grow 17 percent between 2004 and 2014, adding more than 2.2 million new jobs to the workforce.

Flags Around Campus for Utilities Mapping Project
 Wondering about all the little flags popping out of the ground around the Main Campus?
As part of a capital improvement plan, the college is working with a contractor to update the map of all underground utilities.
Once this project is complete, in-house staff will have the ability to locate utilities with the use of a GPS.
The project is expected to be completed at the end of November. For more information, contact Facility Services at ext. 2332.

Four Faculty Attain Tenure
The Board of Trustees approved the tenure of four JJC faculty members at the Oct. 14 board meeting.
The four faculty members are:
(From left to right) Tim Bucci, Culinary Arts and Hospitality Department; Andrew Cheblana, Culinary Arts and Hospitality Department; Duane Stonich, Natural Sciences Department (Fire Science); and Sherri Morrow, Counseling.
Dennis Haynes, vice president of academic affairs, said attaining tenure is a rigorous process for the candidates that involves collaboration between the deans and vice presidents, department chairs, and the tenure committee.
"Each of these individuals has become an active, important member of our faculty and a valuable resource for the college," Haynes said.

Athletic Department Update

JJC athletic teams are again having very successful seasons and we encourage you to support them as they wrap up their regular schedules and participate in post-season play. Women's Soccer The JJC women's soccer team has been named N4C Conference Champs. The team hosts the College of DuPage on Saturday, Oct. 25, for the Region IV Championship. The winner will advance to the District finals in Dallas, Texas. Game time is at noon.
Men's Soccer The JJC men's soccer team has received the #2 seed for the Region IV playoffs. They begin playoffs at home today, Oct. 22, at 3 p.m., against #3 seed Harper College. With a win, they will most likely ppay #1 seed Triton College away on Saturday, Oct. 25, at noon in the Region IV Championship.

Scholarships Still Available
There are several scholarships still available through the JJC Foundation Office. Three are described below:
Dr. Herman J. Adelmann Medical Scholarship
For the last 10 years, the Dr. Herman J. Adelmann Medical Scholarship has awarded over $150,000 to JJC students enrolled in medical school.
This substantial $10,000 scholarship is awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement and is given to a JJC graduate who is now enrolled or will be enrolling in an M.D. program.
Those interested must submit documentation of enrollment in an M.D. program. Applicants can apply for this scholarship online at www.jjc.edu/info/scholarships.

Annual Epicurean Festival of Food and Wine Nov. 21
The Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Department is holding their 8th Annual Epicurean Festival of Food and Wine on Friday, Nov. 21, from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Main Campus cafeteria.
There will be different stations to sample both exquisite food and fine wine. A silent auction table will be setup with great items to bid on, along with the highlight of the evening - a live auction. Bid on a dinner for yourself and friends with a private chef or a wine tasting evening.
Ticket price is $60 per person. Tickets are available by calling Dori Miller at (815) 280-2255.
All proceeds from the event and auctions will go towards the Culinary Arts Education Fund.

Raise Funds for Fight Against Breast Cancer
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
For the month of October, employees of JJC will be going Passionately Pink for the Cure to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer.
Participating is simple. Just wear pink (item of clothing) on every Friday throughout the month of October and make a donation of $5 or more to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Faculty, Staff Awards and Recognition
* Chef Mike McGreal was a keynote speaker for the Indiana Career and Technical Education Statewide Conference in Indianapolis this month. McGreal will also present this month at the National Career Pathways Network Conference in Cincinnati with Professor Linda Padilla of the Math Department to show how two curriculums have integrated to teach math skills in an occupational program.
