Eight JJC employees representing multiple academic disciplines will travel to China in October for a 10-day staff development trip to further internationalize the college's curriculum. JJC's faculty will attend lectures and visit important cultural and historical sites in Shanghai and Beijing while partnering with instructors from Xi'an to learn about the institution's academic practices and Chinese pedagogy in their respective fields. JJC was one of four community colleges in the nation to receive the $150,000 grant in 2007. Faculty members traveling to Xi'an are Dr. Julie Delfinado, English and World Languages Department; Dr. Jim Ethridge, Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences Department; Dr. Max Lee, Natural Sciences Department; Assistant Professor Eileen McKee, Veterinary Medical Technology Department; Dr. Fred Miller, Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences Department; Professor Roxanne Munch, English and World Languages Department; and Access Services Librarian Susan Prokopeak. Second Annual Disabilities Awareness Day Oct. 15
Keynote speaker is quadruple amputee who lives life to the fullest
JJC will hold its Second Annual Disabilities Awareness Day on Wednesday, Oct. 15, to coincide with National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which spans the month of October.
The event, which will be held on the Main Campus, will offer a variety of activities, including resource tables from 10 to 11 a.m. and a keynote speaker, Daniel Davison, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Main Campus Theatre.
Davison is an example of living life to the fullest in spite of overwhelming physical challenges. A quadruple amputee, he walks; drives a car; competitively sails; parachutes out of airplanes; is an advocate for the handicapped and inspires people in corporate settings, schools, churches and youth groups with his powerful story and message.
"We hope this day will inspire success, especially amongst those potential students who think college is out of their reach," Pam Dilday, director of the office of student activities, said.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the effort to educate the public began in 1945, when Congress enacted a law to designate the first week in October to such issues. In 1988, Congress expanded that week to a month-long event.
For more information, contact Pam Dilday at ext. 2755 or pdilday@jjc.edu or visit Daniel Davison's Web site at www.danielrdavison.com.

I am fascinated with the idea that our thoughts and actions have a ripple effect and that we, in turn, are affected by the ripples of thoughts and actions of others."
Mayfield earned her M.F.A. in drawing and her B.F.A. in drawing and printmaking from Kansas State University.
The exhibit runs through Oct. 31 and will be open during normal gallery hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday in the Laura A. Sprague Art Gallery located on the second floor of the J-Building.
