Fall '08 Headcount Largest in JJC History

parking

The cars spilling out onto the front lawn of the college the first week of school was the first indicator that this academic year would be different than others in Joliet Junior College's 107-year history.

With the Main Campus' 3,248 parking spaces filled on Aug. 28, the third day of the semester, roughly 200 students were forced to park on the areas of grass surrounding them.

This year's fall semester headcount is the largest in JJC's history. The grand total, coming in at 14,088 students, is up 7.1 percent from last year.

"JJC is an especially busy and vibrant place this semester," Betsy Oudenhoven, vice president of student development, said. "With our increase in enrollment, we are also seeing increased interest in student involvement outside of class and there is a palpable sense of energy when you are walking around campus. It's an exciting time."

This week, the college released its fall 2008 10th Day Census Briefing report, prepared by the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness. Many of the findings in the report reveal growth in several areas.

"There are many factors leading to our enrollment surge, including the growth of the JJC district and the effects of economy," Joe Offerman, director of institutional research and effectiveness, said. "I'm thrilled at the record numbers-this is just proof that JJC is a top choice for an affordable, quality education."
