Traveling Sustainable Art on Display at Main Campus
Official recognition of globe and talk about JJC sustainability initiatives on Sept. 3

A five-foot in diameter, 500-pound globe that collects solar energy through photovoltaic panels is now on display on the Main Campus.

solarearthIn conjunction with the globe's arrival, the college will host an official recognition of the display as well as talk about JJC's current sustainability initiatives on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 4:30 p.m. in the plaza outside of the Planetarium, where the globe is located.

Legat Architects--the architectural firm the college is collaborating with to assess space and facility needs in the new master plan--designed the globe called "Solar Earth" as part of the "Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet," an outdoor art exhibit that ran along Chicago's lakefront in the summer of 2007. The public art project was developed to inspire individuals and organizations to take action against global warming.

Just days before Governor Rod Blagojevich signed a bill that requires all Illinois colleges and universities to plan and practice for emergencies, 55 JJC staff members were already taking part in an active shooter drill held on the Main Campus.

Though the simulated shooting lasted only 20 minutes in a cordoned-off section of classrooms and hallways of the A- nd T-Buildings, participants experienced the sounds of gunfire and screaming while practicing how to make tactical and potentially life-changing decisions in split seconds.

"I thought it was very realistic with the sounds of gun pops, screaming, and footsteps running down the halls," Ryan Smith, vice president of institutional advancement and research, said. "Now that I have gone through the drill, I feel much better prepared to deal with this type of situation, tactically and mentally."

The drill also provided more hands-on training for the college police department-officers practiced their first response skills while one JJC police officer and two campus safety officers acted as the shooters.
