The first sustainability meeting for the 2008-2009 school year is on Sept. 3 at 3:30 p.m. in the Board Room.

President's Contract Renewed Through 2012
The Board of Trustees voted to renew President Proulx's contract at last night's board meeting.
 Proulx's contract now extends through June 30, 2012.
Since her arrival, the college has approved and moved forward with its new master plan and new strategic plan, both of which Proulx said make it an exciting time to be at JJC.
"During the past two years, we have been building on the college's solid foundation to position ourselves for sustainability during the coming years of growth in District 525," she said.

Fall PPD Week Preview
College offices to close so all employees can attend General Session
Fall 2008 Personal and Professional Development (PPD) Week activities kick off on Monday, Aug. 18, and run through Friday, Aug. 22.
This semester, the college will close its offices Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 7:30 to 10 a.m. so that all employees will have the chance to attend the continental breakfast and General Session.
Featured presentations throughout PPD Week include: · "Everything You Wanted to Know About the Master Plan But Forgot to Ask," Monday, Aug. 18. · "Mountains to Molehills," Tuesday, Aug. 19 (department chairs session); Wednesday, Aug. 20, (staff session and adjunct faculty session), with Dee Cox of Lambton College, Canada. · General Session Keynote: "How to Stay REVVED," Wednesday, Aug. 20, with Dee Cox of Lambton College, Canada.

Foundation Secures $32,000 for Tech Students
Exelon and Grainger establish scholarship opportunities at the college
The Joliet Junior College Foundation recently secured a total of $32,000 in scholarship money from area businesses for students in technical programs at the college. Exelon Generation, LLC established a total scholarship fund of $30,000, to be divided into 10 $3,000 scholarships that will be distributed in the fall 2008 semester for students pursuing degrees in applied sciences.
"Exelon has been a generous supporter of Joliet Junior College," Kristin Mulvey, executive director of the JJC Foundation, said. "This gift allows us to work with a business in our district to ultimately benefit our students."

Fine Arts Announces '08-'09 Theatre Season

The Fine Arts Department kicks off its 101st theatre season in October with the comedy "The Nerd" by Larry Shue.
The action centers on the hilarious dilemma of a young architect who is visited by a man he's never met but who saved his life in Vietnam. The visitor turns out to be an incredibly inept, hopelessly stupid "nerd" who outstays his welcome with a vengeance. This production is directed by Assistant Professor Tammy Perkins and will be presented Oct. 2-5.

GED Grads Recognized at Annual Ceremony
Seventy graduates were honored at the 24th JJC Annual GED Recognition and Awards Ceremony, held on June 18 in the college's City Center Campus Ballroom.
Sponsored annually by the Division of Adult and Family Services (DAFS), Dr. Proulx and Dick Dystrup, Board of Trustees vice chair, provided greetings and welcome to the nearly 500 guests in attendance. Dr. Proulx presided over the ceremony and conferred graduates with certificates of completion.
Director of the Division of Adult and Family Services Dr. Terry R. Irby, Thom Price, dean of community and economic development, Senator A.J. Wilhelmi, Larry Walsh, Will County Executive, Dr. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, Will County Superintendent of Schools, and Dystrup provided congratulatory remarks to the graduates as they received their JJC certificates.

Faculty, Staff Awards and Recognition

Kristin LaTour, faculty member in the English and World Languages Department, presented a paper titled "Denise Levertov's 'Question of God': A Faith Journey Through Poetry" at the 20th annual Oxford Roundtable in Oxford, England on July 15. This is an international conference with universtity and community college faculty as well as government leaders in attendance.

Joe Thomas and Jerry Raino, faculty members in the Technical Department, completed three Habitat for Humanity homes this summer in Joliet for families in need. With help from students, Joe supervised HVAC work and Jerry supervised the electrical work on the homes.
