History Professor Publishes First Book
Lyons writes on the history of public education and reform in Chicago
When John Lyons emigrated from London in 1994 to begin his doctorate at the University of Illinois at Chicago, he knew that his final dissertation would reflect a topic that would ultimately tell him more about the history of the city. Now an associate professor of history at JJC, Lyons has written a book based on that dissertation called "Teachers and Reform: Chicago Public Education, 1929-70," published by the University of Illinois Press. "The more I read about the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) and Chicago education history, the more I realized that there is a rich history of teacher activism in Chicago and that the story of teachers and reform is a fascinating one," Lyons said.
