Board Approves Referendum on Fall Ballot
The JJC Board of Trustees approved a measure July 8 to seek voter approval of an $89 million building bond referendum at the November general election.
This question will be on the ballot for voters in the Illinois Community College District 525, which includes the counties of Will, Grundy, Kendall, LaSalle, Kankakee, Livingston, and Cook.
The referendum is part of the funding options for the college's master plan. It is tied to projects that support the creation of new jobs in JJC's seven-county district.
These projects include:
* a new nursing/allied health building to provide learning space for new programs in health care such as dental hygiene and physical therapy assistant programs
* adding eight new science laboratories/classrooms * the expansion of the Automotive Department on the Main Campus to accommodate bodywork and other programs

JJC Awarded Grant for Work Study Program JJC was recently awarded an $11,000 grant through the Illinois Board of Higher Education's (IBHE) Illinois Cooperative Work Study Program. The state-funded program is designed to create internship opportunities in the community and develop partnerships with area businesses by using grant monies to match employer wages.
Administered through the Office of Career Services, the grant matches an intern's employer's wages at a 50 percent rate. Director of Career Services Mary Jo Wolfersberger (right) said the program helps students reduce their loans and encourages permanent employment of Illinois graduates in the state.

Key Safety, Security Improvements for Fall
Joliet Junior College continues to make safety and security at its campuses and centers a top priority.
In light of events at Northern Illinois University, college administrators have put new programs and improvements on the fast track to ensure that they can be completed by the beginning of the fall 2008 semester. Those safety and security improvements include: * The installation of throw-locks on approximately 367 classroom doors. College officials plan to complete the project by the beginning of the fall 2008 semester pending Illinois Community College Board approval. Similar to locks installed on hotel doors, this will allow students and instructors to lock themselves in classrooms if the situation calls for it, but still allow them to exit the classroom without a key.
