No appointment necessary. Prepare 32 bars of an uptempo or ballad, musical comedy genre, no rock or pop, and be prepared to dance. Accompanist provided. All characters should have powerful, well-trained voices, almost operatic in nature. All characters need a British accent unless otherwise indicated.

Character Breakdown:

• Archibald Craven: 30's-40's, high baritone/tenor. Mary's wealthy, crippled uncle, reclusive, cheerless, distraught by the death of his wife.
• Mary Lennox: 10-12, alto/mezzo. Transitions from petulant and surly to warm and nurturing, the heart and centerpiece of the show. Must be able to carry off demanding vocals and emotional content.
• Dr. Neville Craven: 35-40, baritone. Archibald's younger brother, secretive, jealous, dour.
• Lily: 25-35, soprano from middle C to high C. Archibald's dead wife, sweet, tender, loving.
• Martha: 16-25, mezzo/alto belt. Mary's chambermaid, spunky, high spirited, overwhelmingly optimistic. Yorkshire dialect.
• Dickon: 18-25, tenor. Martha's brother, mischievous, mystical, and "old soul." Yorkshire dialect.
• Ben Weatherstaff: 50+, baritone. Head gardener, gruff yet kind. Yorkshire dialect.
• Colin Craven: 10-12, boy soprano to E. Archibald's bedridden son, spoiled, isolated.
• Mrs. Medlock: 30+, non-singing. Housekeeper, stern and serious.

(The following appear as ghosts and in flashbacks)

• Rose Lennox: 25-35, mezzo. Mary's haughty mother.
• Albert Lennox: 30-40. Mary's loving father.
• Ayah: age open, alto. Mary's nanny in India.
• Fakir: age open, high tenor. Mysterious.
• The Dreamers: age open, S-A-T-B. To play a variety of roles, all have solo singing lines.
