TROUTMiddle Fork of the Salmon River

We are proud to announce that the Middle Fork of the Salmon River was just ranked the 3rd Best Whitewater River Trip in the World by National Geographic. This breathtaking 100 miles of river drops 3,000 feet in elevation through the largest wilderness in the continental US with 2.3 million acres. From the headwaters at the base of the Sawtooth Mountains you flow through lodge pole pine forests dropping into rolling hills of grasslands and into the sheer granite walls of the Impassible Canyon. One of the most beautiful places in the world and its located right here in our own Pacific Northwest!

We just had some of our prime dates open up in early July!  This is the best opportunity that we have been able to offer in years!  Don't miss your chance to book one of the best weeks to fish on the Middle Fork. The weather, water levels, fishing and rafting are all at their best during early July and this is your opportunity to experience it for yourself.

We had a great time once again with the Torras, Bentsen and Berry Families this year. These great families have spend many amazing trips with us over the years.  This season marked Vincent Torras' 17th year on the river with us.  Most of his trips on the river have included the presence of his three daughters Kathryn, Andrea, and Denise along with some of his grandkids.  Vince's great friend Don Berry had to miss this year but we were still so happy to be joined by Don's family, Peter and Barbara Bentsen, Ron Berry and Debra Reeves.  Peter and Barbara have become annual guest on the Middle Fork with us over the last few years and we look forward to each trip with them.  Many of our guides have grown up with these families and look forward to many more trips with them in the future.

The core crew is all coming back this year for another Middle Fork season.  We all hope to see you on the river with us this summer!

Rogue River  MULE CREEK
The Rogue River did not disappoint this fall, with good steelhead runs, gorgeous Oregon fall colors and fun rapids to keep our guides on their toes. Helfrich River Outfitters had the opportunity to guide all types of groups this year. Our three day Rogue River fishing trips offer the comfort of overnight lodging accommodations, making this trip a great way to for everyone to enjoy the comforts of home in the wilderness while enjoying the thrill of learning to fish for steelhead.

rogue foodDavid Stone from Boston, Massachusetts made Helfrich history this year when he spent a trip on the Rogue with the 4th generation of the Helfrich family to row him down the river. Starting with Prince Helfrich, followed by Dave, Ken and now Kelsey, the tradition of Helfrichs on the water lives on. David was joined by great friends and family for a three day trip on the Wild and Scenic Rogue.  He shared great stories with the group about his trips on the rivers with all four generations of Helfrichs.  Thank you for joining us on the river this fall David!

Better than average steelhead runs are expected for this upcoming year.  Removal of dams on the Rogue River System will have significant benefits to the fishery.  The Rogue River is currently under a great transformation as the fourth dam is removed this year and the river is returns to its natural free-flowing state.  For the first time in more than 100 years, the Rogue could flow unimpeded for 157 miles from the Cascade foothills to the Pacific Ocean.  The Rogue is the largest Salmon-producing stream in Oregon other than the Columbia River System and has great potential to return to its historic fishery rates. With the removal of the Savage Rapids Dam late last year, over 500 miles of spawning grounds have been opened up to Rogue River Salmon and Steelhead.  The Gold Hill Dam and the Elk Creek Dam were both removed in the summer of 2008 and the Gold Ray Dam, the final obstacle left to be removed from the river system, is scheduled for removal in late 2010.  With these outdated dams removed, the health of the Rogue River system is expected to improve exponentially.  According to the Bureau of Reclamation, we can expect to see and increase of approximately 114,000 more salmon and steelhead each year.  We are all very excited to experience improving fish populations each fall.  Come experience the Rogue in its natural free-flowing state for the first time in over 100 years.

One of Our Favorites - Jim Juza
Most of you know Jim Juza from your Idaho river trips over the years.  After 30 years as part of the Helfrich River Outfitters Family we want to recognize Jim for the contribution that he has made. He is not only a great oarsman, fisherman, historian, mentor, and friend, but Jim has a special endearing way of impacting others.  Hired in 1980 by Dave Helfrich, Jim has continued on with the Helfrich Crew as Ken's right hand man.  Jim grew up along the banks of the McKenzie River with many of the Helfrichs in Oregon.  After earning a Fish and Wildlife Science degree at Oregon State University and starting a family of his own, Jim fell in love with the wilderness of Idaho and decided to move to Salmon where he still lives today with his wife Lois. On and off the river, Jim's commitment to helping people and making a difference in the lives of others has impacted more people than we could ever count.  He has a passion for sharing his knowledge with others and has become quite the storyteller.  We love Jim's historical stories and fun-loving personality around the dinner table in the evenings.

Jim spends his winters in the backwoods of Idaho working as a biology technician for the Idaho Fish and Game.  Monitoring elk and deer and conducting wildlife surveys has become another passion of Jim's and keeps him busy for much of the winter. When he's not on the river or in the backwoods, Jim truly enjoys being a family man.  He and his wife Lois were proud to welcome two new grandbabies into the world this past year and have been busier than ever traveling to visit family and welcome these new little ones into the world.  Jim and Lois's generous personalities have expanded their family to include their godchildren and kids in the community. He and Lois even open up their home for foster kids from the community in times of need.

Jim works with the Helfrich Crew on the Middle Fork of the Salmon and Lower Main Salmon.  His abundant knowledge of fishing, river history, and funny stories makes him a priceless addition to each trip. He always has a story to tell and something to share with both guests and guides.  He is so generous to share his wealth of knowledge with fellow crew members and up-and-coming guides to help everyone improve their river abilities and outdoor cooking skills. Jim's take-charge personality and ability to act as a leader has made him an amazing guide, mentor and friend.  Thank you Jim for all of your hard work and dedication.  We love you!
