Where We Ride: Medina Twin Sizzler Race Course

Don Barnett Don Barnett is the Service Manager at our Medina store. He enjoys all types of cycling, including fast road rides and races. He is a veteran of the Twin Sizzler bike race, a July 4th tradition that returns to Medina for the 37th year in 2012.

The 27-mile loop is an enjoyable ride for racers and casual riders alike. It's been updated this year to avoid a rough road in the last few miles. It starts right in downtown Medina, and follows scenic back roads around the city.

Tech Talk: Using Different Tires on your Mountain Bike

A common question in our stores is "I have a mountain bike, but I don't ride it on serious off-road trails. Can I swap the tires to something that's more suitable for streets and bike paths?"

The answer is a definite YES. There are many different tires to choose from. You can read about the pros and cons of different tires, and the issues you need to consider when choosing them, in this article:

2012 Bike To School Challenge a Huge Success: Students Biked 52,084 Miles To School In May!

Bay Middle School students riding to schoolCentury Cycles' Bike To School Challenge - one of the largest and most successful student bicycling programs in America - concluded on May 25 with a celebration of the bicycling accomplishments of over 4,000 students at schools in Rocky River, Bay Village, and Medina.

Using daily bike counts and student surveys to gauge participation, the students took 15,868 round-trip bicycle rides to school during the three-week program, logging an amazing 52,084 miles! They also saved Mom and Dad $8,718.75 on 2,325 gallons of gasoline, prevented an estimated 57,292 pounds of heat-trapping carbon dioxide from being emitted into the environment, and burned an estimated 885,428 calories!

"Bike To School Challenge is unique and is the best of its kind in the nation," said Chris Speyer, Executive Vice President of Raleigh Bicycles and president of the Bicycle Products Suppliers Association, who traveled to Northeast Ohio from the company's headquarters near Seattle, Washington, to attend the challenge's closing ceremonies at each school and award grand prize Raleigh bicycles to 10 lucky students and three teachers, present two Bike To School Challenge scholarships at Bay High School, and award the five participating schools with $500 each for exceeding their bicycling goals in 2012. "We work with over 1,400 bike stores around the country. I have never seen a bike-to-school program that generates the level of participation and excitement that this one does."

The students also received well-earned praise from the mayors in each town.

Century Cycles Bike To School Challenge"Your choice to ride your bike to school has made a significant difference in your health, the health of the environment, and the health of our city," said Rocky River, Ohio, Mayor Pam Bobst in her address to Rocky River Middle School students. "For that, we thank you, we admire you, and you are inspiring our entire community."

We say the same thing to you that we say to the students - EVERY bike ride makes a big difference in our health and the health of the planet, and we all have a tremendous amount of pedal power. "Define your life. Ride a bike. Save the planet!"
