Night Rides on the Towpath Trail

We're revving up for our 18th season of Night Rides on the Towpath Trail, and they are bigger and better than ever! This year features our second-ever Night Ride in Cuyahoga County, plus other special events. The first ride is on Saturday, April 28, and starts at 8:00pm at our Peninsula store.

Never been on a Night Ride before? See our 5 Tips for Getting Ready for a Night Ride on the Towpath Trail.

You'll find the complete schedule of 2012 Night Rides on the Towpath Trail, plus more links to tips, photos, and videos from past rides at:

Ronald McDonald House Night Ride on the Towpath Trail

On June 2, 2012, join us for a very special Night Ride on the Towpath Trail to benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland. Last year's RMH Night Ride brought our Night Rides to Cuyahoga County for the very first time, and it was such a success, we're bringing it back this year! The ride begins at 8pm at Thornburg Station at Rockside and Canal Roads in Valley View.

There will be snacks provided at the ride turn-around point, and free t-shirts to the first 200 registered riders!

All skill levels are welcome for the casual, fun 12-mile ride. The cost is $20/person in advance, or $25/person on-site at the event. All proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland.

Pajama Party Night Ride on the Towpath Trail for Cleveland Bicycle Month

Cleveland Bicycle Month will be observed all over Northeast Ohio this May, and by popular demand, we again celebrate with our Pajama Party Night Ride on the Towpath Trail! The ride starts at 8pm on Saturday, May 19 at our Peninsula store. Wear your favorite sleepwear (helmets STILL required), and enjoy pajama-party themed snacks at the ride turn-around!

Like all of our regularly-scheduled Night Rides on the Towpath Trail, this ride is FREE and open to all! We will, however, be collecting donations for Project Night Night - please bring a new children's book, stuffed animal, or small flannel blanket to the Night Ride and they will be used to create nighttime comfort packages for homeless children.
Where We Ride: Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail in Summit County

Derrick KortvejesiDerrick Kortvejesi is the Service Manager at our Peninsula store, and is one of our longest-tenured team members. Like many local cyclists, he enjoyes riding the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, mainly the portion that runs through Summit County. The trail passes less than a mile from Derrick's house, so it's easy and convenient for him to get to.

One of the highlights of the Towpath Trail in Summit County is the floating bridge over Summit Lake just south of downtown Akron.

Summit 2012 Towpath TrailThis year marks a milestone for the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail in Summit County, as the first county to have the trail completed through the entire length of the county! The Ohio & Erie Canalway Association celebrates this 22.4-mile achievement with rides and other Towpath-related events throughout the year.

Respect The Bike poster"Respect the Bike" Exhibit

The greatest Ohio-built bicycles of the past, present and future will be on display during the month of May at the Greenhouse Tavern in a unique exhibit called Respect The Bike. The vision of Travis Peebles of Blazing Saddle Cycle, Respect The Bike will feature bicycles from pre-1900 through current-day local builders such as Dan Polito, Rustbelt Welding, Carmen Gambino, and more.

The opening reception is on Friday, April 27, at 7:00pm, and the bicycles will be on display at the popular Cleveland restaurant through May for Cleveland Bike Month. For more info and updates, see the event's Facebook page.

The exhibit will feature a bicycle from the collection of Century Cycles owner Scott Cowan. He is loaning his 1941 Goodyear Double Eagle Clipper bicycle to Respect The Bike. The photo below shows Scott delivering the bike to Travis. You can read more details about the history of the bicycle in this article.

 Bike To School Challenge

2012 Bike To School Challenge is May 7-25, for the first time at Root and Claggett Middle Schools in Medina, back for its second year at Rocky River Middle School, and returning for its 5th year at Bay Village High and Middle Schools.

The three-week challenge strives to incentivize over 4,500 students to ride their bikes to school as much as possible - to help the environment, save gas, improve their health, and inspire their parents and the community to use a bicycle for short trips around town.

To help get the schools and their communities geared up for the Bike To School Challenge, there will be Bike Fairs at each location, with free bike safety inspections, educational information, give-aways, and more!

For more details about each Bike Fair, plus about the Bike To School Challenge, including photos from previous years' events, see:

Tech Talk: Cyclocomputers vs. GPS vs. Smartphones

Garmin Edge 200 GPSThe traditional bike speedometer, or cyclocomputer, tells you the things you most often want to know about your bike ride: how fast, how far, and how long. Many cyclists are now turning to GPS systems to give them more detailed information. A smartphone can provide many of the features of both a cyclocomputer and a GPS.

What are the pros and cons of all of these devices, and how do you decide which is right for you?
