5 Tips: Commuting by Bicycle

Bike CommuterDuring this Bike to Work Week, if you're not already a bike commuter, you may be thinking about starting. But you may have some reservations. These 5 Tips clue you in on some of the things you'll need to think about in preparing to ride to work or school:
  1. Choose to make a commitment to bike commuting, but don't go overboard.
  2. Consider durability over speed when selecting your bike and gear.
  3. Do a dry run on a day off to scout out your route.
  4. Prepare your commuting gear the night before.
  5. Check out the numerous other bike commuting resources available.
Read more details about each of the above tips in this article.
Bike To School Challenge: May 9-27
2011 Bike To School Challenge - Day 1 in Rocky River

Century Cycles is proud to once again be sponsoring and organizing the 2011 Bike To School Challenge at Bay High School and Bay Middle School, plus launching BTS for the first year at Rocky River Middle School. These kids are truly inspiring - 1,001 students rode their bikes to school on May 9, the first day of the Challenge, and they took 4,624 round-trips to school by bike during the first week!

Do you know a child who wants to Bike to School, too? Tell them to go for it! Make sure they wear a bike helmet, use a bike lock, and have them check out our Bike To School safety and etiquette tips for young cyclists.

New Season, New Faces

We'd like to welcome several new additions to the Century Cycles staff!

In our Medina store, Lynne has been a valuable addition to our sales staff since February of this year. Kyle joined us there a short time later...and it's just a coincidence that Lynne is his mom! Helping out this summer during busy weekends in the bike rental barn in Peninsula will be Trevor.

Also, say hello and welcome back to returning staff members Justin and Andrew in Medina, Blanton and Ryan in Peninsula, and Aimee and Bobby in Rocky River!

Kevin Madzia and his Diamondback Zetec Comp and Xtracycle
What We Ride: Kevin Madzia

For National Bike Month, we wanted to spotlight an employee's bike that is set up for commuting, and we looked no further than Kevin Madzia's rig. Kevin is on the full-time staff at the Century Cycles store in Peninsula. In the spring of 2007, he put together this cargo bike by adding the Xtracycle Longtail extension to his old Diamondback Zetec Comp mountain bike (originally purchased in 2001). He now uses the bike for errands and commuting to the shop.

Kevin likes how easy the cargo bike makes it for him to carry anything he needs. The fat tires can handle the conditions on any road or trail, and the long wheelbase makes the bike super-stable. Learn more about Kevin's Diamondback/Xtracycle cargo bike, including the custom components he built it with, in this article:

When is it too rainy for you to ride? When is it too rainy for you to ride?

The rainiest spring in a half-century is definitely taking its toll on many of us. Not that we want to dwell upon the weather, but it begs the question: When is it too rainy for you to ride? Let us know by taking our latest online poll.

With this week being Bike To Work Week, it's appropriate that we are able to report the results of last month's online poll, which asked, "What would make your workplace more 'bicycling-friendly?'" 50% of the respondents said "All of the above, please!" with the choices of "Bike racks/storage," "Showers/Changing area," "Bike-to-work programs with co-workers," and "Wellness incentives." The most popular individual choice was "Showers/Changing area," with 29% of the vote. You can see the full results of the last poll here.
