Out and About on Bikes in the Fall
Greetings!
Did you know that you don't need to come to a Century Cycles store to visit with us? We're hitting the road, baby! My calendar is filling up with events that Century Cycles is proud to be a part of, including the Rocky River Business Expo tomorrow at 2 - 7pm, the Highland Health Fair on October 24-25 (read more about that below), and the Healthy Rocky River Wellness Festival on October 25 from 2 - 5pm. Stop by one of these great events to say "hi!" Also, if you have an event that we should consider, give me a call at the Rocky River store at 440-356-5705 and let me know. Indoor cycling is heating up as the temperatures go down, whether you do it at home on a trainer or in one of the many classes offered around town. Even my sister has jumped on the spinning bandwagon! As with outdoor cycling, the right gear can make a difference in how much fun and success you experience with indoor cycling. Our trained staff is happy to help you find the right shoes, clothing, and accessories whether you ride outside OR inside! Speaking of riding outside, I hope you'll join me and a bunch of my friends for the Friendsville Freebie Fifty ride in Medina on October 24, and the last big ride of the year, the Red Flannel Metric Century on November 1. Let's bundle up and hit the road!
Cheers,
Scott Cowan, Owner Century Cycles

Thanks for a Great Season of Night Rides!
We'd like to send out a great big THANK YOU to all of our friends, customers, and staff for showing up to help make 2009 our most successful season ever for our Night Rides on the Towpath Trail! We averaged over 100 people per ride! Our final ride of the year was on Friday, October 9. About 15 riders showed up for a wet but relatively warm fall evening ride. You can see pictures from the ride here.

When the sun sits lower and the leaves fall, there's no reason why you can keep riding with the right clothing and accessories. Here are a couple of our favorites, both old and new!
The Pearl Izumi Vagabond Jacket/Vest is awesome for cycling in changing conditions. Available in both Men's and Women's-specific sizes, this full-feature shell has removable sleeves so it easily converts into a vest, making it one of the most versatile pieces in your cycling wardrobe. It's constructed from Pearl's lightweight Elite Barrier fabric, which provides maximum wind resistance and superior water repellency. This superlative top also includes a large rear pocket for sleeve storage, 2 front pockets plus a napoleon pocket, elastic cuffs for a secure fit and the zips are hidden at the shoulders for an ultra-clean look! In stock in our stores; $99.99.
Pearl Izumi's P.R.O. Softshell Gloves are just what you need to extend
your riding season beyond autumn and into the winter. Their P.R.O. Barrier and AmFIB fabric blends offer
excellent wind and water protection, while the fleece interior feels
great against the skin and provides extra warmth. You'll love the
silicone dotted palm that gives you plenty of grip on the handlebars
and the neoprene wrist gusset that allows easy movement. Plus, the
Softshells come with a soft microfleece wiping surface and a
hook-and-loop closure system for a customized fit.
In stock in our stores; $44.99.
The tiny Blackburn Flea Headlight is perfect for the weight-conscious commuter or racer looking to squeeze in a few extra training miles after sundown. Its four super-bright white LEDs provide a 40-lumen beam that lets you see and be seen. It's powered by a powerful internal lithium-ion rechargeable battery, and attaches easily to your handlebars with the built-in hook-and-loop strap. And, NEW for 2010, the Flea includes a USB charger, so you can plug it into your computer while you work during the day, and it's ready to guide you home in the evening. 5 Questions: Chris Walters
Chris Walters is proof that sometimes it pays off to spend a lot of time hanging out at a bike store. He was such a regular at Century Cycles in Medina that they hired him when he turned 16. Today, at the ripe old age of 20, Chris still works at the Medina store and goes to Lorain County Community College, where he's pursuing an Associates of Arts degree with a focus on literature. He plans on transferring to Cleveland State next semester.
Q: How many bikes do you have? A: I just whittled it down to four. They are in a work area in the corner of my basement.
Q: So I take it your parents are supportive of your bicycling? A: Oh, yeah. When I was younger, my mom had me go on 10-mile bike rides with her. I hated it at the time - I just wanted to watch TV or hang out with my friends - but now I realize it was one of the big reasons I took up cycling. Q: What's your favorite ride or trail? A: My favorite trail is Reagan Park. My favorite ride right now is my commute to work. It's 13 miles, mostly on country roads. It's real peaceful. Q: What cycling advice do you most often give? A: Clipless pedals are easier to get out of than toe clips, if you're falling. Most people are scared they'll be stuck in them, but you're more likely to pull your foot sideways than backwards as you're falling. Q: What was your first bike? A: My parents gave me a black-and-white tricycle with BMX handlebar pads. I still have it, but I didn't count it in the six.
