Scott Cowan Greetings!

I'd like to start this newsletter off by saying how honored and thrilled I am that Century Cycles recently received the World Class Customer Service Award, presented to us by Smart Business Cleveland Magazine on June 4.

Since starting Century Cycles over 16 years ago, customer service has been our focus. I am grateful for the hard-working staff that have kept this focus, and our customers who have rewarded our efforts with their continued loyalty.

With that in mind, remember that I am always glad to talk to you, whether it's in person or by phone or e-mail. I can be reached at the Rocky River store (see number at the bottom of this newsletter), or by replying to this message.

For all of you GOBA riders, we look forward to seeing you on the road during the event next week, June 14-21, where we'll be there as always to help keep your bikes running smoothly, and take care of any other of your last-minute clothing and equipment needs.

Other dates of interest coming up:
  • June 15 - Father's Day - Get Dad on a bike!
  • June 20 - Summer begins! Enjoy the sun on your bike!
With the busy cycling season upon us, we've got several new faces helping us in all three of our stores, as well as many of our veteran staff. Look for them, and introduce yourself. All of us are ready to ready to help you Define your life - Ride a bike!

Thanks for reading!

Sincerely,

Scott Cowan, Owner
Century Cycles
On the Job Training: Bicycle Rental Coordinator

Chuck Yarborough of the Plain Dealer is coming to our Peninsula store! Chuck's "On the Job Training" column is based on his experiences trying various unusual, scary, or dirty jobs in the Northeast Ohio region.

This Saturday, June 14, Chuck will take his turn as our Bicycle Rental Coordinator. He'll be helping our customers fill out the rental forms, getting their bikes adjusted and ready to ride, and sending them on their way to enjoy a ride on the Towpath Trail!

Here you can see Chuck on his last assignment, working as a farm hand on a chicken and sheep farm! If you're in the Peninsula area this Saturday, stop in and see him in action, and look for his report in an upcoming edition of the Plain Dealer!

Tales from the Blog Side

Have you seen the Century Cycles Blog? For those of you not plugged into the blogosphere, a "blog" (short for "web log") is an online journal or diary. It's where we post informal updates and other up-to-the-minute news and information, and where you'll end up finding random thoughts, quirky observations, and sometimes thought-provoking discussions.

Here are some recent highlights from our blog:

Featured Products: Commute by Bike

With gasoline prices reaching records highs on an almost daily basis, we are helping more and more people outfit their bikes for their daily rides to work, school, and errands around the neighborhood.

There are many products to help turn your bike into your Sport Utility Vehicle of choice, such as cargo racks, bags, fenders, and lights. We can help you pick the right ones to fit your bike and your commuting needs.

One of our favorite new products is the Avenir Metro Shopping Pannier. We have carried products like this in limited numbers for years, but all of a sudden, they are flying off the shelves! Sized just right to hold a standard brown grocery bag (or a gallon of milk), they clamp easily and securely to the side of your cargo rack. A shoulder strap is included to go straight from your bike into the store, and back into your kitchen! And, it folds flat to stay out of the way when not in use. $39.99 each.

Speaking of fenders, we have been sure to keep plenty of our favorite model on-hand, the Planet Bike Hardcore Fender Set. Their full-length coverage (with cool-looking mud flaps) keeps the rain and mud off of your back and your bike. Available in sizes to fit hybrid/touring and mountain bikes, as well as the advanced Cascadia model for 29er mountain bikes! $39.99 per set; other sizes for road bikes and recumbents available by special order.

Bike To School Month Wrap-Up

The Bike To School Month event at Bay High School was a success beyond our wildest dreams. 543 students signed up for the program, with an average of 224 students riding their bikes to school each day. The event saved an estimated 14,350 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions!

For more statistics and other information, see this final press release from the event.
