Latest MPC Report Reveals Mainers and Foundations Remain Generous in Tough Times |
Each year, foundations and generous individuals provide millions of dollars of support for nonprofit organizations that strengthen the lives of Maine residents and their communities.
As part of the Maine Philanthropy Center's commitment to promote philanthropy, we collect and analyze the most recent data available. This year's report will be released at MPC's Annual Meeting on Thursday, June 16th, and is available online now. |
"The Maine Philanthropy Center's annual look at the status of Giving in Maine highlights the difficult economic times for the country and the state," says Janet Henry, MPC's president. "But it also shows that Maine's leading foundations are responding to the increased basic needs by awarding the largest portion of their grant dollars to human services." |
Highlights
The Top 20 Maine Foundations responded to increased basic needs by giving 29% to Human Services in 2009. Maine's Top 20 Foundations awarded more than $52 million, or 82% of their grant dollars, in Maine. While total giving by the Top 20 decreased, a greater portion of their giving is coming to the state (9% more than last year). While there was 10% decrease in Maine foundation assets this past year, giving decreased by only 6%.
