Chapter 8 has once again achieved FIVE-STAR STATUS for 2009! In addition, Chapter 8 was presented the GOLD AWARD in the medium chapter category at IREM's Leadership and Legislative Summit. Congratulations to Bill Lehan, CPM, 2009 Chapter President, and his Executive Council and Board of Directors for 2009!

| A Message from Chapter 8 President
Lynn Kiley...
Dear IREM Chapter 8 Member:
Spring has flown by and it's almost summer time in Washington. We are all enjoying the beautiful weather after a long tough winter. Our dynamic groups of industry leaders have been hard at work interviewing incoming IREM Members. Our Executive Council Board and Committees who volunteer their time have approved 7 CPM Candidates to become CPM's this year, as well as 6 ARM Members and 2 AMO Members. I am also proud to announce that Chapter 8 also has a designated ACoM, IREM's newest designation for Commercial Property Managers.
We have held many successful events in the past few months. Our April meeting featured Social Media and we had Marci Brand as our guest speaker. Marci is the President of Creative Marketing Concepts, a marketing firm which specializes in the challenges facing the property management industry since 1990. Everyone who attended came away with a number of ways to improve their marketing skills and ways to incorporate the new age of social media into their business during these tough economic times.
May's IREM events started off with IREM's Leadership and Legislative Summit held the first week in May in Washington, D.C. Our Chapter is fortunate to be in the Nation's Capitol and each year we look forward to this important conference, which ends with our annual Capitol Hill Visit Day on May 5th. IREM partnered with the CCIM Institute for this Capitol Hill Visit. See Astrid's article below for more information.
During the Legislative Summit, Chapter 8 partnered with IREM Headquarters and held a fantastic networking event which was entitled "IREM Canteen and USO Show". We enjoyed the music and performance of the phenomenal RADIO KING ORCHESTRA! See pictures below.
And the final IREM event in May was held on May 14th. Our Fifth Annaul IREM GALA was held at the beautiful Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland. The event once again benefited Special Love for Children with Cancer. And with the help of our generous Friends of IREM and management companies, we were able to make a donation to Special Love in excess of $30,000!
June's lunch meeting will be a joint event of Chapters 8 and 92 and will be held this Thursday, June 10th. This is a MUST ATTEND for all Candidates, who will learn vital information about taking the MSPA. Other members will learn valuable information about IREM First, from IREM staff VP Lynn Disbrow. Don't miss this informative meeting! See registration information below.
The deadline for signing up for IREM 8's 13th Annual Golf Tournament is coming up quick--there's only one sponsorship remaining! This tournament benefits Special Olympics of Washington DC on June 21, 2010 at Country Club of Fairfax. It will be a fun day to golf and network with your colleagues while donating to a great cause.There's only one sponsorship left so hurry!

OPERATION CARE PACKAGE
Come out and participate!!
The USO (United Service Organizations) has been the bridge between the American public and the U.S. military, since before the United States entered World War II. In times of peace and war, the USO has consistently delivered its special brand of comfort, morale and recreational services to the military. The USO, a congressionally chartered, private, nonprofit organization, relies on the generosity of individuals and corporations to support their activities.
Let's do it again Chapter 8!! We're putting together another USO Operation
Care Package opportunity for Saturday, June 19th, 9am - 11am at Ft Belvoir, VA.

The care packages are packed with all the "little things" that send an enormous message to the troops from those of us back home: they say thank you, we will never forget you, we are behind you, and we love and cherish the work you are doing for all of us. All together, we successfully stuffed care packages, packed boxes for shipping and sent out over 10,000 care packages to troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and hundreds of military bases around the world.
Our Chapter is proud to be a part of such a great cause and continues to work with the USO in 2010. Thank you to all who participated in the past for this GREAT CAUSE and we hope you'll consider joining us on June 19th. Email Astrid Steinhilber and let me know you'd like to participate.

HOWARD UNIVERSITY UPDATE
The IREM LIVING AND LEARNING CENTER at HOWARD UNIVERSITY has been launched! Juniors at Howard University pre-assigned to the West Towers have been invited to participate in this Living and Learning Center. Twelve juniors will be selected for this program and if selected, they will be assigned for a one year study program, learning more about property management, becoming IREM members, and taking IREM courses.

APRIL MEETING RECAP
IREM Chapter 8 hosted a lunch meeting at AGAINN Restaurant, a trendy new British Isle Bistro on New York Avenue on April 14, 2010. The Chapter's special guest speaker was MARCI BRAND, President of Creative Marketing Concepts, who gave an informative and fun talk about Social Media platforms such as Linkedin, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. The meeting was certainly interesting and informative.
Marci shared her thoughts on:
- How to separate "social from "business" networking
- The four myths of social media
- The DO's and DON'T's of sharing
- Why you need to participate
- How to avoid wasting time

IREM Gala...A Fantastic Event!
IREM Chapters 8, 77 and 92 once again held the annual IREM Gala dinner dance, which benefited Special Love for Children with Cancer. This event was held on Friday, May 14th at the beautiful Congressional Country Club.
Special Love has put smiles on the faces and hope in the hearts of more than 11,000 children in the Washington area during its years of service and support to families of these special children. Special Love's camp adventures and weekend getaways offer relaxation and comfort to parents and the most fun-filled experience to the children who make Special Love what it is.
The final accounting has not yet been completed, but it is anticipated that we will be making a presentation to Special Love for approximately $33,000.

IREM CANTEEN & USO SHOW NETWORKING EVENT!
IREM Chapter 8 teamed up with IREM Headquarters during the Leadership and Legislative Summit and held a networking event on May 3, 2010. The IREM Canteen & USO Show Networking Event was a lot of fun and featured the musical performance of the RADIO KING ORCHESTRA. The event was held at the J.W. Marriott. The event had a 1940s theme and we honored all Veterans during the evening.

A Decade of Dedication
The tenth annual IREM Leadership and Legislative Summit was held May 1-5, 2010. IREM Members from across the nation converged in Washington, DC and discussed progress in the real estate management industry and the Institute, as well as interacted with colleagues who shared their passion.
The conference opened with keynote speaker journalist Steve Roberts. Chapter Star Awards were presented the next day during Chapter Leadership Forum, along with many leadership training sessions.
The conference concluded on Wednesday with Capitol Hill Visit Day.

for Chapter 8! I would like to thank
Lynn Kiley, Solomon Bickerstaff, Tracy Seymour (Allied
Barton), Daman Toth (Allied Barton),
Steve Rill and Kenny Cunningham for attending
this event. As we have done in previous
years, Chapter 8 tagged along with the folks from Chapter 92 (Maryland).
We visited with the legislative aids for Congressman Chris Van Hollen
(D-MD), Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), Majority Leader Congressman Steny Hoyer
(D-MD) and Congressman John Sarbanes (D-MD).
While we were not able to meet personally with Congresswoman Eleanor
Holmes Norton (D-DC), we did drop off the take-away's provided by IREM.
Some of the hot topics this year - Tax Treatments of the
following - Capital Gains to remain
at 15% beyond January 1, 2011 at which time the rate increases to 20%. Carried
Interest IREM and CCIM oppose an increase to the tax treatment of carried
interest for real estate partnerships. Leasehold Improvements to extend the
15-year recovery period for leasehold improvements, and seek to make the
provision permanent.
In addition - Commercial Mortgage Market Liquidity was
discussed in the areas of Credit Union
Lending IREMM and CCIM urge support for an increase in the cap on credit
union lending from 12.25% to 25%. Term Extensions for properties that can
support current debt beyond the 1 year time limit. Accelerated
Depreciation to provide more generous depreciation allowances to improve
the cash flow on real property. And
lastly, Mortgage Insurance would
help bridge the current equity gap experienced by many properties today that
wish to refinance based on property worth 2-3 years ago.
