A Message from Chapter 8 President
Well I must admit the year went by just as every president who preceded me said it would--in a blink! I avoided the presidency for ten years, having concerns for the level of commitment required, in addition to a fear of public speaking. But I can honestly tell you that both are surmountable by anyone--even me--even you!
Part of the reason it is so much easier than anticipated is our fabulous Executive Director, Jean. To say she makes it easy is like saying the Empire State Building is a large building ... I cannot thank her enough.
Another reason it is so manageable is the dedication of the wonderful people who serve on our Executive Council/ Board of Directors. At every turn I was provided with all the support I needed, and seeing their faces in the audience at the meetings made it feel like I was talking to friends and co-workers, instead of public speaking to strangers. I find my new level of comfort with speaking in public (I still feel like bolting, but I don't) has helped me professionally during business presentations and as an instructor with IREM.
So, my fifteen minutes of fame are up! Would I do it again? Yup. Would I recommend it for others? Absolutely. Get involved. As a Board member, and especially as Chapter President, you can push for those things that are important to the Chapter, to IREM, and to the industry--to YOU. Also, active participation in the Chapter is a key marker when IREM National is auditioning for new IREM instructors or people to fill regional or national positions. Both open up exciting challenges and opportunities to travel nationally and internationally as an IREM ambassador!
Thank you again for the opportunity to serve as IREM Chapter 8's 2009 President. I enjoyed every minute of it!
Bill Lehan, CPM®, ARM®, RPA, LEED AP IREM Chapter 8 President |

USO OPERATION CARE PACKAGE
COME ON OUT AND PARTICIPATE!!
Back in October, IREM 8 members, our Friends of IREM from Allied Barton and FEA, along with friends and family helped "stuff" over 6,500 camo-packs for our troops overseas with Operation Care Package at the USO, Ft. Belvoir, VA.
Since 1941, in partnership with the Department of Defense, the USO has offered respite to US service members on the home front and overseas in the way of lounges, clubs, shows and care packages. The USO currently runs 135 centers worldwide staffed mostly by volunteers.
The packs, put together in assembly line fashion, contained donated items such as: shaving cream, toothbrushes and paste, safety razors and sun screen. This was such a huge success for us that WE ARE DOING IT AGAIN!!
