A Message from Chapter 8 President
What can I say about Hawaii that you have not already heard or imagined. It was a great venue, especially if you got the chance to get off Oahu and get to the less touristy islands. Yes, there are rewards for serving on the board! Next year we're in Orlando, not as exotic, but still a great venue.
But free or reduced travel costs is only one of the benefits of belonging to the board. The chance to get ideas and issues that you want addressed and the ability to champion them to great conclusions is both exciting and rewarding. The time commitment is equal to what you want to get out of it. You can spend as little as two or three hours per month on the basic board activities, or as much as the cause you want to advance requires. Board membership is also a key to advancing within IREM National. Active participation in IREM is given credit when the National leaders are looking for the next selectees to positions such as National Committees, Regional Vice President, or for new faculty members. So bite the bullet and take a chance. Ask Jean Collins (IREM 8 Executive Director) or Lynn Kiley, CPM (2010 chapter president) how to get involved.

IREM 8 October Meeting Recap!
If you missed IREM 8's October General Membership Meeting you missed a GREAT MEETING! This event was held on Tuesday, October 27th at Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum.
Our Chapter President Bill Lehan and Executive Director Jean Collins were welcomed by the Obamas!
We enjoyed a Scavenger Hunt , Tour, and Cocktail Reception at the premier wax attraction in Washington, D.C., which was open exclusively for IREM 8 Members and Friends.

This fully interactive wax attraction offered a chance for IREM 8 guests to test their knowledge with historical quizzes, travel through history with the nation's Founding Fathers, and put their feet up in the Oval Office. Members were able to go "behind the scenes" and learn the trade secrets used in the creation of Madame Tussauds' wax figures. This was by far the most fun evening of the year for IREM 8, filled with lots of laughs and great memories! Check out some of the highlights from our evening at MADAME TUSSAUDS....

IREM Fall Business Meetings & Inaugural Gala Recap

IREM's Industry Forecast Meeting for 2010

IREM's Industry Forecast Meeting for 2010 will be held on Tuesday, January 19, 2010. The format of this meeting has changed slightly. Because of past weather problems in January, having a breakfast or a lunch has been challenging. We decided to try a later afternoon event and have changed the time to 3:00 p.m. We have also added a VENDOR BLENDER, which will be like a mini tradeshow, immediately following the Forecast Meeting portion with a cocktail reception beginning at 4:30 pm.
Chapter 92 is our host chapter this year. Email Jamie Grabner at IREM 92 for more information on this upcoming event! Watch for registration flyers.

USO - Operation Care Package
 On Saturday, October 31, 2009 at "Zero-Dark-Thirty" IREM 8 members came together to participate in Operation Care Package at the USO, Ft Belvoir, VA. Since 1941, in partnership with the Department of Defense, the USO has offered respite to US service members on the home front and overseas in the way of lounges, clubs, shows and care packages. The USO currently runs 135 centers worldwide staffed mostly by volunteers.
IREM 8 members, our Friends of IREM from Allied Barton and FEA, along with and friends and family helped "stuff" over 6,500 camo-packs for our troops overseas. The packs, put together in assembly line fashion, contain donated items such as shave cream, toothbrush and paste, safety razor and sun screen. Many thanks to Afi Edim (JBG), Tom Larson (FEA), Jennifer Francioli (CBRE), Mary Ann Riley, Bret Kenworthy, Tracy Seymour (Allied Barton), William Washington (Allied Barton), Daman Toth (Allied Barton), and Jeanna Lo (Allied Barton) for participating in this event.

Swine Flu Resources' Reminder
President Barack Obama has declared H1N1 swine flu a national emergency, indicating that the "rapid increase in illness...may overburden health-care resources." Just last Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the flu was spreading widely in at least 46 states and had already caused the hospitalization of at least 20,000 Americans. In addition, more than 1,000 deaths have been attributed to the virus and more than 2,400 additional deaths were probably associated with it, officials said.
As employers as well as managers of buildings in which millions of people live, work, and shop, IREM Members are uniquely positioned to support efforts to contain the outbreak.

2010 IREM National dues and Local Chapter 8 dues invoices will be mailed soon. Chapter 8 invoices will be mailed the first week in December. Remember, in order to maintain your IREM membership and keep your designations you must pay BOTH National and Local Chapter dues.
