KASSAV

The legend of zouk

"The West Indian band Kassav' has largely influenced the music of the record [Amandla] on which Marcus Miller, Tommy LiPuma and
 I are working." Miles Davis

Kassav' All U Need Is Zouk !

A new album from Kassav' is always like a vintage Bordeaux, like Bastille Day fireworks, like a World Cup final: you have tasted it before and know the rules, it feels like you already know which feelings you are about to experience. And each time, you are overwhelmed, you start clapping as if it were the first time.

You might say "this is just another album from Kassav'," however with All U Need Is Zouk, you cannot escape the fact that this album is unique.

You are overcome by a festive impulse of dance and powerful feelings, the impression of surfing on the world sound wave, and the sensation of actually being in Guadeloupe and Martinique. All of the familiar elements of Kassav's music are present in All you need is Zouk and you find yourself absorbed into a new story, a new sound and a new fervour.

Recorded last spring and summer in Martinique, Guadeloupe, Barbados, Paris and Brussels, All U Need Is Zouk is a portrait of the greatest West Indian band, celebrating three decades of influential music. The creators of Kassav', Jacob Desvarieux and Georges Décimus, together with Jocelyne Béroard, Jean-Philippe Marthély and Jean-Claude Naimro, have released their fifteenth  studio album (individually the band members' have released about sixty live albums and solo records).  Didier Lozahic, the faithful sound engineer, brings to life the studio recording and Chris Chavenon brings it all together into the final mix.

The enthusiasm of the first album, Love and Ka Dance, (released in 1979) is still there. Added to this is the strength and trust earned by hundreds and hundreds of concerts throughout the world and the fact of being famous far beyond the Caribbean. Kassav's influence has stretched across Africa, the Indian Ocean, the suburbs of every western city and has even reached the smallest Pacific islands.

Indeed, zouk music cannot be invented with impunity. Few people (even in the West Indies) believed in this great dream that would bring these small Creole francophone islands into the world concert scene. Despite any doubt, Kassav' did it, taking inspiration from a traditional rhythm of carnival, the mas a sen jan (from the name Saint John, a butcher and a mask group leader in Pointe-à-Pitre during the years between the two world wars), on which they throw in funky bass, rocky guitar, salsa brass, heavy keyboards, drums from the countryside and their islands' suburbs, and a mixture of Creole languages from Guadeloupe and Martinique. A revolution? Maybe even more.

Kassav' hit the West Indies like a hurricane, the equivalent to the combination of the glamour of Elvis Presley, the greatest hits of the Beatles and the lyrics of Bob Dylan.  At the beginning of the 80s, the West Indian society was completely overturned: everyone danced to this brand new frenzy, everyone sang in unison these choruses that looked reality straight in the eyes (you must listen to Syé bwa or Zouk-la sé sèl médikaman nou ni). Everyone in the West Indies was proud of its artists' successes throughout the world.  Stadiums in Africa had never seen such large crowds for artists from another continent.  Miles Davis refers to zouk as a major bombshell. Jocelyne Béroard placed the Creole language in the Top 50 with Kolé séré in duet with Philippe Lavil. Kassav' was the first black band to sing in USSR.

And the adventure continues today. Kassav' is at the pinnacle of popularity in its community and everywhere the West Indian music hits the crowd; in New York, Miami, all over Africa and throughout the Caribbean islands. A unique art league of hedonism and commitment, musical research and sense of party, All U Need Is Zouk is sharpened for these kinds of peaks.

KREYOL FEST  @ WINGATE PARK, BROOKLYN, NYC, SATURDAY JUNE 28, 2008

Considering that a gush of rain put a slight damper on the day, KREYOL FEST went on without a hitch.  The fan must be applauded for waiting out the rain, using the tents as shelters. It become a networking scene  where everyone used the time to exchange friendly words, jokes and stories and making new friends. KREYOL FEST organizers and staff must be commended for their professionalism, once the rain was over the festival was back on track.  We visited a couple of vendors who were selling arts and crafts, ate some delicious Haitian griot and black rice and we even partook in the RARA band. WMP had a chance to see performances by Black Parent, Zin, Krezi, Zenglen, Carimi, T-Vice and Tabou combo. Tabou combo's 40th Anniversary celebration was a nice added touch to the festival, and The Haitian Times gave every band member an award of recognition. Tabou Combo took us back with Classic hits and as we looked on the people's faces, we noticed nostalgia was in the air.

Be there next year regardless of the weather forecast. WMP assures you that you will enjoy yourselves like we did.

BIO
In 1990, DJ Cadet started to garner a following at Nell's, one of the most reputable nightclubs in NYC. As attention on him grew, numerous club owners began to approach him. He branched out of NYC, where he was playing regularly at Life, 13, Palladium, Tunnel, AKA, The World, The Bank, Limelight, and many others, and began playing worldwide at venues with capacities ranging from 200-2000, like Bataclan in Paris & Love Zoo in Switzerland, along with various clubs in Japan, Iceland, and Spain.

Since 1991 DJ Cadet has had various releases under independent labels such as Kult Records (Badge 251), Eight Ball Records (Bang the Bush) and Freeze Records (The Joint), and 3 CDs under his own Sony label, Love Zoo/Topaz Records. His talents have also led him to producing many of the top name acts in the music industry, including: Dr. Dre, Kool and the Gang, Method Man, Crystal Waters, Queen Latifah, KRS One, Buster Poindexter, Salt N' Pepa, and Billy Porter. Beyond the club world, DJ Cadet continues to play at exclusive parties, record releases, music conferences & events. His attention is also given to his own production and recording studio (T-Groove), his publishing company (Tedac Unlimited), and the current development of radio & cable TV broadcasts. DJ Cadet's most recent venture, EpicPromoNYC, has created Global Wednesdays, a monthly party that encourages young professionals to network at an exclusive nightclub, while introducing them to the fresh sounds of music from around the world. This effort combines DJ Cadet's innate business sense, through marketing and promotion of up-and-coming clubs, and his renowned reputation as a DJ by exposing world music to a hip and ambitious audience. This innovative mixing of music, culture, and business is what makes DJ Cadet alluring, exciting and much sought after. DJ Cadet latest release on Kult Records is "Tribal Dance - Voodoo Samba"  featuring Roland Richards of Bob St Clair hit song "Raise your leg up"(Africanism).

Dj Cadet is presently in Finland, but he had a chance to give WMP some updates.
He is working with a virtual group name "The Kinky Bastards," a rock project, and he will have another single out titled "This is Love" on Kult Records.  Dj Cadet describes his music as mix of Dance, Hip hop, Reggae and World Music.  He adds "I incorporate Rasin in my music and am always in the lookout for the oldest sound of Haiti. Do-laDo-la
Do-laKonpatones

By Rich Wilson -Music Critic

"This is Konpa!" And this is Do-La at Chenango Summer Music Fest in Hamilton, NY. Do-La's performance delivered quintessential outdoor summertime dance music. This alone made the experience worthwhile. However, the Brooklyn-based Haitian Konpa band also provided a history lesson into the rhythmic roots of U.S. popular music. The Creole influence on everyone from Bo Diddley to Bob Dylan is unmistakable. Do-La is well rehearsed, educational and fun. There was a beautiful instrumental passage reminiscent of Funkadelic circa 1972. The song "After-Party" made this listener long for one. All in favor of dancing till six in the morning say, "Do-La!" Many high praises could be heard as the enthusiastic crowd dispersed. Hopefully this show marks the beginning of a bountiful relationship between Do-La and upstate NY. Norwich, perhaps? Binghamton?? We are very appreciative of good music in these parts. My only constructive criticism: they could have been more gratuitous with the encores. When the audience calls for one and there are no performers waiting to take stage, an abbreviated Marley cover played by one member while band mates pack up does not cut it. This is roots music. This is a good time. This is Do-La.

Stevie Wonder
At the Hammerstein Ballroom, Manhattan Center during "The Tenth Annual Keistar Productions WONDER-FULL Tribute Party" on Saturday June 14, 2008,  Stevie Wonder, The Legend, The Genius, graced the party goers that night.  The crowd went wild as Stevie was being ushered on stage.  With DJ Spinna and Bobbito at his side, Stevie serenaded the crowd with an a capella rendition of 'That Girl.'  He later sang 'Superstition' and 'Do I Do' with the backing of the friendzied crowd. DJ Spinna, Bobbito and the Keistar Productions crew kept the crowd happy as the people danced till 3am.

So next time you hear of a KeiStar productions party happening in the city, be there you never know who might drop by.
