Lunch Meeting
Topic: "Critical Decision Making"
Speaker: Mike Beard, Managing Partner, Value
Based Project Management LLC
Mike Beard, PMP, ITIL is the managing partner of Value Based Project Management and author of a new book, Successful Project Portfolio Management: 28 Critical Elements. Mike is a dynamic, diverse, and practical consultant with more than 30 years in technical and functional management positions, including more than 15 years of operations management in Southeast Asia. The ability to make critical decisions is accurately defining a risk or problem, framing risks related to the solutions, handling personal bias, and adherence to governance and process. We have all either made or seen the results when a critical decision is made using the "shotgun" or "ready-fire-aim" approaches. A well-defined critical decision making process prevents secondary problems from arising. Critical decisions may be quick or could take months depending on the compliance required for the product or service. Our discussion will focus on a framework approach to establish an integrated decision making approach in conjunction with a few simple tools.

Topic: "Nexus and Apportionment: Developing a Multistate Strategy"
Instructor: Kathleen K. Wright JD LLM CPA
Kathleen K. Wright, JD, CPA, MBA, LLM (Taxation), is a professor of accounting in the Graduate Tax Program at California State University Fullerton. She has a private tax practice focusing on personal and small business tax planning dealing primarily with California state issues. The concept of economic nexus is that a state may exercise its taxing authority over an out-of-state business that has no physical presence at all in the state. Focus is on the new rules that govern doing business in California, but you'll also review developments in other states, as well as receive charts and descriptions of other states' laws. You also will analyze planning opportunities that surround single sales factor apportionment and market-based sourcing-all new in California in 2011. Review the impact of these complex rules on companies that have to prepare an analysis under ASC 740-10 (or as it was previously known-FIN 48).
