Greetings!
Since first launching the InContact Networking Newsletter for Orange County Finance & Accounting professionals last year, we have received tremendous positive feedback. For that we say a huge thank you. Your support has encouraged us to push ourselves further and we have since introduced InContact HR, a networking newsletter for Orange County HR professionals, and a Los Angeles edition of both newsletters will publish next month. We seized the opportunity to expand our reach, and we encourage you to do the same thing with your networking efforts. Many groups go "dark" over the summer months, so the next couple of months may be your last chance to seize some valuable networking time until the Fall.
We look forward to seeing you at a networking event soon!

Tudhope's Networking Notes
Tudhope's Networking Notes are a series of brief articles on the subject of networking and are published in the monthly newsletter of Financial Executives International (FEI). To view past articles, please visit our website at www.ProjectProSearch.com
"You reap what you sow" is a well-worn phrase that we all probably heard growing up many, many times. Its origin dates back to the Bible and it essentially means that your deeds, good or bad, will repay you in kind. In a quick Internet search of the phrase, Google had a seemingly infinite number of pages devoted to it. A random click led me to a Rev. Bill McGinnis' interpretation of its meaning, which seemed fitting for my purposes here. He writes, "You plant the seeds (sow), and then later you gather the resulting harvest (reap). The harvest that you reap depends on the kind of seeds you have sown. If you sow corn, you will not reap olives." In another example, imagine a farmer who devises a plan to wait until just before harvest season to sow his crop, but will compensate for lack of planning with longer work days, extra water and fertilizer. The farmer's attempt to "pour it on" at the last minute will have little impact on the resulting harvest. Sounds laughably simple and obvious, right? A long way from the farm, it's much harder to see how what Steven Covey calls "The Natural Law" works in networking. But the similarities are right there for all of us to learn about how we can harvest what we have sown. If one were to work diligently for years in their job, but never get out and meet new people, the thought of them having a network of colleagues and business acquaintances when they need it seems ludicrous. But that's exactly what I see every day: well-meaning and hard-working folks who only start thinking about building their networks when a career change is imminent or already upon them. Meeting people and building connections is so important. You will want help in your career some day and the best way to get it is to have rich relationships in place before you need them. You reap what you sow.
