Completely useless but fun...
Why do we celebrate Memorial Day in May?
Answer:
Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans - the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) - established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country.
The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation.

Oil Spill Not Expected to Disrupt Shipping
Port of New Orleans Still Optimistic
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is calling for improving conditions at Southwest Pass - the main shipping channel into the Mississippi River, at least for now. There are no restrictions on the Mississippi River now and there are no indications from any agency there will be. "We are continuing to coordinate efforts with the Coast Guard, pilots and all maritime stakeholders to ensure there will be no disruption to commerce on the Mississippi River," said Port President and CEO Gary LaGrange. "Conversations are ongoing with all of our customers and no one has indicated intentions of diverting ships away from the Port of New Orleans. We have every confidence in the Coast Guard, NOAA, pilots and all involved that commerce will continue uninterrupted on the Lower Mississippi River."
Ships will be inspected upon arrival at Southwest Pass to determine if they need to be cleaned. The Coast Guard says ships moving at a safe pace through light oil sheen may not require cleaning. To date, there have been no reports of oil on commercial cargo vessels entering the Mississippi River or along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. As a precaution, two cleaning stations have been established on the Mississippi River in order to better facilitate the flow of maritime commerce. The cleaning stations are now located at Boothville and at Burrwood. In the instance of a heavily oiled ship, it will be cleaned at Boothville, where it can anchor. Booms will be placed around the ship before it is pressure washed. The Burrwood location is for ships with light oil sheen and the ships to be cleaned while in motion. The Burrwood location is in Southwest Pass, about 15 miles below Head of Passes.
So what is happening today regarding the actual oil spill cleanup efforts?
The "Top Hat" oil-containment device has reached the sea floor in the Gulf of Mexico and should be in position over a leaking well head and operational by the end of the week, well owner BP said Wednesday. A larger containment vessel was unsuccessful last week in stopping the flow of oil from the gusher about 5,000 feet underwater. The spill is sending 210,000 gallons of crude into the Gulf of Mexico each day, government and company officials say. The new device, called "Top Hat," is a 5-foot-tall, 4-foot-diameter structure that weighs less than two tons. The structure is being deployed by the drill ship Enterprise. |

New BNSF Memphis Intermodal Yard, Intermodal Sets Record High, Demand For Trucks & Equipment Rising, U.S. Export Stats
The BNSF officially opened it new $200 million intermodal yard in Memphis on Wednesday, April 23. The 185-acre facility has eight electric rail-mounted cranes which will be able to handle 1 million lifts per year. These cranes produce zero emissions and reduce the number of trucks needed to move containers within the year. The new facility at 4814 Lamar also has a streamlined automated gate system for trucks that uses digital cameras to record incoming and outgoing traffic. The gateway system gets the trucks into and out of the yard faster, cutting idling time by 50 percent.
Intermodal transport's share of U.S. long-haul truck traffic reached a record high of 13.5 percent in the first quarter, according to a recent analysis by FTR Associates. Both total intermodal movements and movements of domestic intermodal equipment reached new market share highs, according to the firm's May "Intermodal Update" report. "This marks the fourth consecutive share increase for intermodal," said Lawrence Gross, senior consultant for FTR and principal author of the report. "The sector was hitting on all cylinders during the first quarter. Domestic sector market share resumed growing after a pause in the fourth quarter of last year, continuing a solid upward trend that began as early as third-quarter 2007." Meanwhile the international sector continued to recover from its downturn, with international intermodal shipments growing faster than overall long-haul truck. Gross expects that intermodal growth will continue for the foreseeable future. "The stars are aligning for what could be an acceleration in intermodal share growth," he said. "Active truck capacity is coming into balance with demand, and even a modest increase in freight demand could lead to shortages of truck drivers and, hence, truck capacity, resulting in more opportunity for intermodal. Increases in fuel prices and the continued rebound in international shipments will also aid share growth."
Demand for new trucks and other equipment is rising as the economy improves and capacity tightens, surveys by two vehicle market research firms report. CK Commercial Vehicle Research said fleet operators are feeling much better about buying equipment and putting parked trucks back into service. Its Fleet Sentiment Buying Index rose 18 percent in April to 64.6 from January, with 33.3 percent of its private and government fleet participants saying they plan to place orders for power units in the next three months and 28.9 percent planning trailer orders. That followed a 21 percent drop in the FSR Buying Index in January. Rapidly tightening capacity led ACT Research to increase its forecast for heavy-duty truck production this year by 6,000 units, raising year-over-year growth to 19 percent in the latest release of its North American Commercial Vehicle Outlook. "Fleet age has truckers increasingly making comments about upgrading the fleet," said John Burton, vice president of the transportation sector at ACT Research, Columbus, Ind. "Anecdotal evidence suggests reserve capacity is in poor shape, having been idled and cannibalized during the downturn," Burton said. |
