Water Cooler Trivia

Completely useless but fun...

Which continent has been labeled the world's coldest desert?

Antarctica

Answer:
Antarctica

The ice sheet that covers almost all of Antarctica is the largest body of fresh water on earth, containing about 90% of the world's ice and 70% of the fresh water.  It has also been called the world's coldest desert, only receiving 1-2 inches of precipitation a year, making it the driest continent on Earth.

Daylight Savings Time

(move your clock one hour ahead)

Daylight Saving Time was instituted in the U.S. during World War I in order to save energy for war production by taking advantage of the later hours of daylight between April and October. Since 2007 (due to the passage of the Energy Policy Act of 2005), we experience 4 additional weeks of DST, changing its time frame from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November.

What is CSA 2010 and Why The Concerns?
New Truck Safety Rating System -  Improvement or "A Perfect Storm"?

FMCSA's Comprehensive Safety Analysis 2010 (CSA 2010) is a national safety initiative to more effectively identify and quickly intervene with large truck and bus drivers, and carriers, who are not complying with safety rules in order to make the roads safer for everyone.

CSA 2010 LogoTruckload executives at the recent Truckload Carriers Association's (TCA) meeting held Feb 28-March 3,  were told that changes in their operations and relations with shippers could be required to maintain strong safety scores when CSA 2010 is implemented later this year.  The FMCSA plans to begin implementing the program in July.  Already expected to eliminate several thousand truckers from the driving pool, the federal government's new truck safety rating system is likely to threaten the career of thousands more, as well the fortunes of many fleets, carrier executives and others familiar with the program said.  "It is clear a lot of carriers were late to recognize the scope of CSA 2010" said Chris Burruss, President of the TCA.  Kevin Burch, outgoing TCA Chairman and President of Jet Express said CSA 2010, along with economic recovery and an aging workforce, was part of a "perfect storm" that would rapidly bring the driver shortage issue back to the forefront.  Gregory Feary, a managing partner at the law firm Scopelitis, Garvin, Light, Hanson & Feary, said CSA 2010 could make driver retention more expensive, because all carriers will look for the higher-rated drivers, who also might seek better paying positions with competitors.

So what does CSA 2010 say about their program?  This is their most frequently asked question..."Will CSA 2010 assign safety ratings to individual CMV drivers? I heard that CSA 2010 is designed to rate CMV drivers and to put many of them out of work this summer."

Response..."No. Under CSA 2010, individual CMV drivers will not be assigned safety ratings or safety fitness determinations. Consistent with the current safety rating regulations (49 CFR part 385), individual drivers will continue to be rated, as they are today, following an onsite investigation at their place of business when they operate independently as a "motor carrier" (i.e. have their own USDOT number, operating authority, and insurance). CSA 2010 will provide enhanced tools for Safety Investigators to identify and address drivers with poor safety records as part of motor carrier investigations in order to increase driver accountability for safe driving behavior. CSA 2010 is designed to meet one overriding objective: to increase safety on the Nation's roads. Therefore, it is, by design, a positive program for drivers and carriers with strong safety performance records Also, it will send a strong message that drivers and carriers with poor safety performance histories need to improve."

Lots of discussion on this topic still to come.

Trans-Pacific Trade Forecasted for 2010 Growth, TCA Analysts See Tonnage Rising, Port of Tacoma Gets Clean Air Report CardNews

Growing Trans-Pacific trade is leading the way toward long-awaited recovery in containerized ocean shipping, PIERS Global Intelligence Solutions wrote in a forecast for 2010 published in the March 1 edition of the Journal of Commerce.  PIERS economist Mario Moreno projects total U.S. containerized ocean imports will grow 9.1 percent this year after a steep decline in 2009.  The forecast projects containerized imports on the Trans-Pacific trade lanes will grow 12.1 percent in 2010.

Analysts attending the TCA (Truckload Carriers Association) convention last week seem to agree that economic numbers are indeed getting better.  In the past two weeks, we've seen jumps in freight tonnage, trailer orders, worker productivity, industrial productions, consumer spending and durable goods.  Various fleet executives stated that business had vastly improved , and while freight rates continue to lag, tonnage is steadily rising.

Lots of talk about the clean air act in Long Beach and Los Angeles but what about other major U.S. ports?  It turns out that a recent study delivered to Port commissioners at the Port of Tacoma shows that 90% of the heavy-duty trucks serving terminals meet the 2010 clean truck standards.  Clean air goals were adopted in early 2008 as part of the ground-breaking Northwest ports Clean Air Strategy, a partnership among the Port of Tacoma, Port of Seattle and Port Metro Vancouver, B.C.   The strategy outlines jointly established short and long term clean air goals for ships, cargo-handling equipment, rail, trucks and harbor craft.  In 2009, the Port of Tacoma launched its clean truck program, adopting the regional strategy's goals as standards.  The program's 2010 standards require trucks to have 1994 model year engines or newer.

CS Memphis Office Joins IP's "WOW" Program
Employees Excited to Embrace Recycling Efforts

CS Recycling Program
International Paper is one of North America's largest recyclers of recovered office paper and corrugated boxes.  They collect, consume and market more then 6 million tons (or approximately 10%) of all paper recovered annually in the U.S.  IP collects and processes this recovered paper at their own plants as well as purchase recovered paper from outside sources.  The recovered paper is then used by their mills to create new paper products or is sold to other manufacturers across the globe.  New "WOW" (We-cycle Office Wastepaper) boxes were distributed to all CS Memphis employees in early March, adding Cornerstone Systems to their growing list of outside sources.

According to the Carnegie Mellon Green Practices Institute, paper waste makes up about 40 percent of the commercial and residential waste sent to landfills. Most offices generate 1 1/2 lbs. of waste paper per employee per day, and 77 percent of this paper is recyclable. The National Recycling Coalition (NRC) states that each year, Americans throw away enough office paper to build a 12-foot-high wall that extends from New York City to Seattle, Washington.  And here is a "green" thought...recycling 1 ton of office paper can save 17 trees.

Cornerstone is proud to be a participant of IP's "WOW" program!
