Go Green Travel Tips For New Year

Lots of Green Tips Out There But How Do You "Travel Green"?

1.  Use digital camera, not disposable camera.
2.  Carry reusable water bottle, refill as you go.
3.  Use the restroom in airport, not in the plane.  The fuel used for a single flush could run a car for 6 miles.
4.  Don't buy souvenirs produced from endangered species, i.e. shells, feathers, animal skins.
5.  Adjust home settings on AC/heat and turn water heater to lowest setting.
6.  Unplug electronics, appliances.

Completely useless but fun...

The Chinese celebrate New Year between January 17 and February 19th.  This is at the time of the new moon.  2009 is the Year of the Ox which is also known by its formal name of Yi Chou.  The first day of the Year of the Ox falls on January 26.

Intermodal Box Tracking Being Tested
Port of Tacoma Testing GPS Tracking Device

Pretty amazing if a cargo container could send you an email telling you where it is, right?  Well that is just what the BNSF Railway, Yang Ming Line and Safefreight Technology, along with the Port of Tacoma has been testing.  The system is among the first, if not the first, developed for tracking containers inland on rail from a U.S. port.  The SecurityGuard SG212 uses GPS, wireless and Internet technologies to provide data on location, speed, direction, starts, stops and other measures.  The port can trace the exact location of a container in real-time, through a Web map portal that is similar in appearance to Google Earth.  Current testing involves devices attached to Yang Ming boxes destined to Columbus and Cincinnati, Ohio.  The port is considering adding Memphis, New York-New Jersey and other stops on the East Coast.    The port is building a database to help identify trends.  A report will be completed late next year since testing is expected to run throughout 2009.

Global Trade Declines Sharply, Maersk  Drops Charleston Port Call, New Intermodal Service, TSA Reaches 1M Goal

News
World trade has declined sharply in the last few months, and analysts are predicting it will make it harder for countries to pull themselves out of the global recession.  Combined exports and imports from the U.S. dropped 18% in the four months from July to November, falling to $326 billion from $398 according to Commerce Department figures.  Two-thirds of the decrease has been from imports.  In Japan, exports declined 27% in November compared with the previous November, while imports fell 14% in the same period.  China saw its worst foreign-trade decline in December, and Germany experienced an 11.8% drop in exports in November from the previous year which is the largest decline this decade.

On December 18 Maersk Line gave notice that it planned to withdraw from the port of Charleston by the end of 2010.  Maersk is the port's biggest customer.  Its seven weekly ship calls generate 20% of Charleston's volume (364 annual ship calls).  Their announcement was precipitated by the refusal of the ILA locals' to allow the company to operate from a "common-use" area where gates are staffed by nonunion state port employees.  Maersk will phase out its services over the next two years.

Coming soon...new Intermodal service to and from Titusville, Florida.  Scheduled to open February 2009.

The TSA announced the completion of over 1 million fingerprint-based background checks on truck drivers required to carry a HAZMAT Endorsement (HME) on a commercial drivers license.
CS Announces New Employee Wellness Program for 2009
Exciting New Focus Is Response To Employee Survey

Launched in time to be a New Years resolution...the employees of Cornerstone have spoken loud and clear and the answer is yes...

HealthFirst Logo

Responding to a recent CS employee survey, employees provided a staggering amount of data demonstrating an interest in educational and voluntary activities promoting and supporting a healthy lifestyle.  When asked if interested in a corporate Wellness Program, the answer was an overwhelming yes and programs of interests were identified such as weight loss programs, smoking cessation programs, nutrition and fitness programs, educational programs on cancer, heart disease and stroke prevention, employee assistance programs (financial mgmt, job stress)...and much more.

Employers such as CS have a tremendous interest in health-related issues because employers and their employees are major purchasers of health insurance today.  Escalating health care costs continue to remain an issue of great concern.  According to the Wellness Councils of America, more then 81% of businesses with 50 or more employees have some form of health promotion program.  Most employers are offering wellness programs to offset the rising costs of health care.  Worksite wellness is health care reform that works.  Most chronic diseases are related to poor lifestyle choices which are preventable.  Due to the amount of waking hours at work, the workplace is a logical and convenient opportunity to provide individuals with information, along with encouragement and support for improving health and well-being.

A healthy individual is the "cornerstone" of a healthy organization.

Holiday Hero Program Big Hit Again
CS Memphis Employees Adopt Record 56 Children
A Happy Child Receives His Toy
How cute is this little guy?

Ben is opening one of many gifts provided by "Holiday Heroes" through the popular Youth Villages program.
Youth Villages is a nonprofit organization that has developed an array of nationally recognized programs and services to offer children and their families their best chance of joyful and successful lives.  Through generous donors and committed volunteers they are working to help each child have a permanent and happy home.  CS Memphis employees whole-heartedly volunteered again this past holiday season for the Holiday Hero Program adopting a record 56 children.  This beat their 2007 record of 40 children.  Without this important program, many of these children would not have a Christmas.   Once a child is "adopted", the CS employee receives their wish list and goes shopping!  Employees spend $75 per child so each child receives gifts of equal value.

Cornerstone is a proud sponsor of Youth Villages and their worthwhile efforts.  For more information, click here.
