February 2012 Newsletter

A "Love Letter" from GBCA President
Betty Salemme

Dear Members and Friends,

It's an honor for me to address you in my first President's Letter of 2012. First and foremost, I would like to thank Vanessa Picone and the amazing staff at District for hosting this year's GBCA Anniversary Gala. The bitter January weather did not deter the more than one hundred members and guests that enjoyed the delicious food and libations District had to offer. I would also like to thank Nilma Cannard and Charles Currier for pitching in and volunteering their time at the registration table.

Your newly elected Board of Directors has been very busy planning for the future of our organization. Some of the many changes you will begin to see in the next few weeks are a vibrant new web page and newsletter headed up by our own Vice President of Public Relations David Sargent. Gina Guange our Vice President of Operations is diligently working on our e-mail lists and meeting and event invitations. If you find that you are not receiving this information, please let us know ASAP. We are committed to making sure all of our members receive their information in a timely manner. Sabrina Lesgourgues our Vice President of Membership and Bob Schwartz our Affiliate Representative have both spent hours poring over our membership lists. We now have a comprehensive membership list, categorizing honorary, non profit and affiliate businesses as well as concierge members. New changes made to our membership will be immediate, and no one will be using outdated information. This list will be available to any member that requests it in the next month. For this reason it is imperative you complete and return your registration information to Sabrina today. Nilma Cannard has taken over the responsibility of the GBCA financials; we will be hearing her first financial report in March. Our Recording Secretary Jennifer Stanish has put her own personal touches to our meeting minutes and notes. Please be sure to inform Jennifer if you know of any member who is ill, making changes in their job or have any information they would like to share with our members. We will be happy to send them congratulations and support from the whole GBCA membership. We would also like to thank Elizabeth Carey who has accepted the position as Advisor to the GBCA. Elizabeth's experience as an Honorary Member establishing our organization in 1990 made her an overwhelming candidate for this position. We, the board of directors and the membership, appreciate her support.

By now everyone should have received their invitation to our February 29, 2012 meeting. A big thank you goes out to Dina Trueheart and the folks at Morton's The Steak House for organizing "A Taste of the Seaport". At the beginning of the year, Dina spoke up immediately and offered to host what we believe is an incredible opportunity; by bringing the new and some of the legendary restaurants in the Seaport District together with you, the most influential hospitality professionals in the city. This event is a win/win for us all. So please come and meet the chefs and restaurant owners of these prestigious establishments and share in the camaraderie that makes the GBCA what it is today.

Now that I have taken enough of your time, I will close with a great big thank you to you our members, for allowing all of us on the board the opportunity to serve you in 2012. I look forward to seeing you at our first meeting of the year.

Your President,

Betty Salemme

A NEW feature of our monthly newsletter is to place anouncements from our affiliate members here. The affiliate member announcements may be a "save the date" for an event they are planning, to current offers, promotions to share with your guests, as well as some members only offers. We ask Affiliate members who would like to make anouncements using our monthly newsletter that they forward the anouncement to bostonconciergesargent@hotmail.com by the 10th of each month for inclusion.

Our Affiliate Member, Ashley Gonyaw of The Museum of Science  wants to remind everyone about their current exhibit. Geckos is perhaps something you will suggest to guests over school vacation week.

Geckos: Tails to Toepads is now open at the Museum of Science through May 6, 2012. Enter the world of geckos - bulging eyes, night vision, sticky toepads, squawking voices, and disposable body parts. More than 60 exotic live geckos have arrived at the Museum! Check out the Museum's very own Bunny Watson on Fox 25 for a preview of this exhibit or visit mos.org for more information. This traveling exhibit is included with Exhibit Halls admission.

Our Affiliate Member, Blue Magruder of The Harvard Museum of Natural History

has an exciting news about a new exihibit and  an offer which includes discounted parking for GBCA members.

Check out the new Mollusks exhibition at Harvard Museum of Natural History, a 7 minute walk from Harvard Square in Cambridge.  You can learn about oyster reefs, and see hundreds of magnificent shells, including a Giant Clam more than three feet across!  The exhibition also includes some of the amazing 19th c. hand-crafted Blaschka models of sea creatures, made by the same German artists who made Harvard's famed Glass Flowers.

Concierges who'd like a complimentary pass to visit, drop a line to bluemagruder@hmnh.harvard.edu.  New, visitors may now purchase weekend parking for just $5 in the adjacent 52 Oxford Street garage at the museum's front desk, but they must bring their license plate number with them when they come to the desk to purchase their tickets and parking pass

Concierge

The Liberty Hotel- Boston

1. How long have you been a concierge?

I have been a concierge since 2007, spending a short time as a residential lead concierge, and then began my hotel concierge experience in August 2007 at the Liberty Hotel.

2. What did you do before becoming a concierge?

I've worn many different hats in my working career.  The more significant ones being a landscape gardener, an elementary school teacher and a property manager.

3. Tell us about one of your more challenging concierge requests and how you managed to fulfill it?

There once was a guest requesting 5 Massages, 5 Manicures and 5 Pedicures in the comfort of our best suite as one part of a girl's weekend. My colleagues really stepped up and assisted with coordinating all these services to take place in room and they allowed me and more importantly assisted me to deliver on our promise to this guest .This experience speaks to the power of teamwork within our concierge desk team.

4. Tell us something interesting about yourself.

I grew up in Ireland, my whole family lives there, so I have no blood relatives here in the United States, but I've lived here longer now than I lived in Ireland.

5. If you had an extra $100.00 dollars what would you do with it?

lf I had an extra $100.00,  I would spend it on a piece of hand made locally produced art or a craft, at an open studio or local market like Sowa.

6. What is your favorite holiday?

I would have to say Christmas, because we have open house for my husband's family and our friends. We have lots of delicious things to eat, the inevitable Yankee Swap, and the little kids really make it a wonderful family occasion.

7. Tell us about your next vacation.....where are you off to next?

My next vacation is to Ireland for my parent's 50th wedding anniversary. Then In July we are going on our first cruise.

8. What is your favorite color?

I love color, it's fun to experiment within art projects, so it's tough for me to pin it down to one shade. But anything in the lavender family always cheers me up!

9. What are you doing on your next day off?

I love to try new restaurants or ones I haven't been to yet, there are so many.. so I plan on dining at a new one this week.

10. Are you coming to the next GBCA Monthly Meeting? Have you RSVP'd?

Yes, I will be attending the next GBCA meeting. Really looking forward to meeting all the new board members and meeting everyone at the "Taste of The Seaport".....see you there.
