Hi All,
The Fall is fast approaching and there are some incredible things to look forward to!
On October the 5th, yet another "fam" tour is in the workings. This time we will be going to "Olde Sturbridge Village" in Sturbridge, MA. The tour will be on a Monday and it will be a morning excursion to once again, allow those who work the afternoon shift, the chance to experience a great learning opportunity and still get to work by 3:00 o'clock.
The day will begin with a pick up at both Marriott Copley and Marriott Long Wharf with a transfer to Sturbridge, compliments once again, by our friends from North Shore Shuttle! We will then be treated to a welcome coffee followed by a private tour, time to explore the 19th century working village on our own and lunch, before a return to the city. If you have never been to the western part of our state in the Fall, it is truly magnificent and will give us real insight into a close to Boston and fascinating destination for our guests looking for both beautiful foliage and a glimpse into life in New England at the turn of the century. Details and the invitation will soon follow.
Also the much anticipated all member meeting will be held at Symphony Hall on Tuesday the 13th. Not only will we have some important speakers and announcements, a fabulous venue to host us and an opportunity to "dress for the occasion", but through the generosity of Sarah Manoog, Marketing Manager of the Symphony, we will also be offered the chance to stay for the performance after the meeting!
So, be on the look out for these terrific invitations and I look forward to seeing you in your finest form and fashion next month.
Warm Regards,
Ellen

| September 8th GBCA Members Meeting at The Improv Asylum |
GBCA members gathered at the Improv Asylum, 216 Hanover St. in the North End, with a bit of trepidation and nervousness -- who might get called upon as part of the Improv routines. Many members did get called upon but found it all hilarious and educational.
Chet Harding and Norm Laviolette wanted to introduce the GBCA to another aspect of their work. A large part of the Improv's work/fun is in corporate training: Team building, effective communication, organizational creativity, conflict resolution, "Out of the Box" thinking, sales skills, change management, and presentation skills. They have done this with major corporations across the country, and locally with the US District Court, MGH and Dunkin' Donuts. A variety of programming of improvisational comedy shows is offered Wednesday through Sunday (and even a show by the trainees on Tuesday nights. The theatre seats 130 and can be expanded to 180 seats for some shows. If you would like to book a group contact Kristin Martin at kristin@improvasylum.com. The theatre also has a comfortable lounge/bar area for drinks before and during intermission. We were treated with great hors d'oeuvres being continually ferried across the street from Bricco before the show.
Ellen Silverman then spoke for Dayla Arabella Santurri about an invitation to join in at Scullers on Friday morning to be part of the audience for the top secret filming of a reality show episode. No one could know what it was until that morning. Eight GBCA members became part of the "What Not To Wear" episode featuring one of the members of a local jazz combo called Syncopation. It will air this Fall -- watch and see who you can pick out in the audience.
The incomparable Joe Donlavey then spoke about the Fall Social and Performing Arts Preview on Monday, Sept. 21 from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the Wilbur Theatre.
For the second year, Arts Boston is gathering together more than 70 performing arts organizations in one place. Get the latest information and show schedules about what will be happening in Boston this Fall and Winter. This is your one-stop for entertainment information to help you provide valuable information to Boston's visitors! Enjoy food and drink and ticket giveaways! Don't forget to bring plenty of business cards to participate in the drawings. RSVP to joed@artsboston.org by 5 PM on Thursday, Sept. 17th.
State Representative John Keenan of Salem, Chairman of the Joint Committee on Tourism, Art and Cultural De-
velopment spoke of his pride in helping to promote the state and hopes to be able restore some levels of state funding. He expressed great appreciation for all that GBCA members do to promote and support tourism and cultural activities throughout the area. He feels that there will soon be movement on bringing casinos into the state. If you wish to reach him for comment or suggestions on the areas his committee deals with:
Kelly Brilliant spoke about the Fenway Alliances annual "Opening Our Doors" day on October 12th with numerous cultural activities beginning at 9:30am. www.fenwayculture.org.
Katie Miller spoke about the "Try Something New" free festival on the Rose Kennedy Greenway on October 3rd from Noon to 6pm with a farmers market and cooking demonstrations, an artificial skating rink, hula hoop lessons, music performances and kids games. www.hellogreenway.org
Jeremy Thompson of behalf of the Mass College of Art and Design extended an invitation to GBCA members to join Mary McFadden on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 5:00PM for a personal tour of the exhibition Mary McFadden: Goddesses followed by a reception to celebrate the openings of Dog Days Bogota (photographs by Alec Soth) and Goddesses. For more information contact Chloe Zaug at 617.879.7337 or chloe.zaug@massart.edu www.massart.edu MassArt is at 621 Huntington Ave.
Danielle Buchanan of Entertainment Cruises, the parent company of Odyssey Cruises and Spirit Cruises, is hosting a concierge party on the Spirit of Boston on Monday, Oct. 5th from 6 to 10 PM -- dinner, drinks, dancing, friends, and fun.
Wrapping up the meeting, Ellen encouraged the members to think about running for any office on the Board (see the elections notice below). If any member doesn't feel that they would like to be on the board but would like to contribute, there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer for outreach projects or to call around to members to get updates and encourage people to get out for the meetings.
We thank the Improv Asylum for providing the GBCA with a fun-filled evening!! |
