Inspired Teacher Blog: Keeping the Door Open

This summer during the Inspired Teaching Institute we were working through the question of how teachers can help to not only change their own practice, but change that of their peers as well. We discussed the typical school phenomenon where teachers close the doors to their classrooms so they can exercise freedom to teach the way they know they should, in relative obscurity.

In devising their own leadership strategies for next year, one teacher responded to this "closed door" tendency with a simple goal. "This year I will keep my classroom door open."

That statement sticks with me today as I think about getting ready for the fall. It is so brave in its simplicity...

Step One: Set Goals

"Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead.
"
                                   ~ Louisa May Alcott

Okay Inspired Teachers, it's time to dust off your comfortable walking shoes, start lifting some lesson plans, and get in shape for opening day. Yes, yes, we know you're still in the thick of summer humidity and relaxation - but you can't run a marathon without some training and the same goes for starting the school year. So pull yourself out of the easy chair, swap that sweet tea for an energy drink, and let's hit the track.

The first step in Inspired Teacher Boot Camp is figuring out what you're aiming for this academic year. When you identify the target, you instantly get a picture of what it's going to take to get there. This week we've put together a few steps to help you start the goal-setting process. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

Grab a journal and take a walk through this reflection exercise. In the process of remembering what you did last year, you're likely to hit upon experiences you want to repeat and those you want to avoid. In the process of envisioning the future, hopefully you'll start to feel the stirrings of excitement for a successful year ahead.

Preventing Reinventing the Wheel

It's sad but true, after thousands of years of educating human beings, few ideas in the world of teaching and learning are truly unique. Thanks to the internet we can pretty easily tap into the intellectual capital of educators across the country -and around the world. So if you have a great "new" idea for the upcoming school year, take some time today to see if there's a colleague somewhere out there who has tried it before. See what lessons have already been learned, what pitfalls you can avoid, and who you can talk to when you take on these new adventures!
