From the point of view of clinical effectiveness in acupuncture what is the value of in-depth study of the Extraordinary channels?
While many practitioners resolve to use the Eight Extraordinary Channels when

there are multiple channels involved, or for their elegance in resolving musculoskeletal imbalances, I feel that the fundamental reason to use these channels is to generate a kind of empowerment. The effect of this empowerment upon the patient reaches from the physical level to the Qi body and the mental, emotional and spiritual components of the patient. This is a radical penetration and energization of the human system. The particular Extraordinary Channel thus invoked acts as a catalyst to "change the direction" of the patient. There is a native American idea that a few times in one's life one might have the opportunity to fundamentally be spun around and to face a new 'direction'. Under the dynamic movement effect of the correct Extraordinary channel the patient may find themselves with a new more positive attitude, a new resolve, a moral re-alignment; they more readily integrate new health and lifestyle practices. It is as if there has been some 'conversion' or even a 'born-again' quality. the Eight Extraordinary Channels hold a fundamentally kinetic character, but the kinetic shift enabled by opening the appropriate Extraordinary channel can resonate through all levels of the being and fundamentally it represents a quality of empowerment.
It is the purpose of this seminar to explore the uses of the Eight Extraordinary Channels and the Eight Powers they embody. The Eight Powers have a tendency towards physical manifestation - this is the direction they carry things towards. In China the power of Eight is used to generate prosperity.
It is interesting that in the world of acupuncture there has been a tremendous acceleration of interest in these Eight channels in the last fifty years compared to the previous 500 years - but mainly in Japan and the West, more materially focused nations.
Here are a few of the core concepts about the Eight Extraordinary Channels which we will be exploring:
This seminar teaches clear and simple diagnostic tools to determine which of the Eight Extraordinary channels is affected. This can help us to understand the Qi movement dynamic of any particular imbalance or illness - which can then lead to improved choice of regular acupuncture channel points, lifestyle recommendations and herbal / nutritional treatment strategies. Notes will be provided.

The Eight Extraordinary Channels define the architecture of the interaction between the various subtle energy bodies. They are templates of movement, thus they help to define the movement principles within the Shen and Qi bodies, and their influence can be discerned within the physical structures of the human physical body, especially at the earlier embryonic stages.
The Eight Extraordinary Channels can be easily accessed on the hands and feet for diagnosis and treatment. These points can be used for treatment with acupuncture, intradermal needles, massage, hand magnets and crystals.
The Eight Extraordinary Channels each express postural tendencies and a particular way of moving and holding the body, and thus a corresponding core emotional attitudinal propensity. The Eight Extraordinary channels thus represent constitutional patterns within individuals of both posture and emotional propensity. We will be exploring these structural and characterological dynamics.
There are specific Qigong exercises and specific breathing exercises to open up each of the Eight Extraordinary Channels. These are easy to practice and enhance a more kinesthetic understanding of these channels within the Qi body. The Eight Extraordinary Channels correspond to the Eight trigrams of the Yi Ching, the ancient Chinese classic of divination. This means that they can be used effectively in Feng Shui and space clearing. I will explain how the trigrams are clearly representations of the actual physical form and energetic tropism of the Eight channels. This also leads to the possibility of trigram divination for diagnosis.
The Eight Extraordinary Channels correspond well to the Eight Auspicious Objects - an ancient tradition in Chinese and Tibetan religious practices. There are thus specific symbols and mudras (hand positions) as well as visualizations to access their power and blessing force. We can use these techniques to strengthen or heal these channels.
I believe that the fundamental insights that led to the theory of the Eight Extraordinary channels predate the Nei Jing by thousands of years and represent teachings and information from much more ancient wisdom traditions, the traces of which can be found in Celtic, Hellenic, Egyptian and Indian mytholog ies and in the Chinese folklore of the beloved Eight Immortals. We will examine the implications of the Eight Extraordinary channels as expressions of eightfold cycles of Gods and Goddesses and explore how and why to access this information in the context of treating patients .
