ePinemerit Newsletter

April 2011

From the Executive Director

Dear Pinemere Families,

We heard you!

In the November e-Pinemerit, we shared the results of the survey of Pinemere families conducted by the Foundation for Jewish Camp after
camp last summer. The two areas that were identified as the most in
need of improvement were our facilities, and our sports program. I am
pleased to report that we have taken a number of steps to improve both
these areas.

In addition to the complete renovation of the "Palace" (the older boys' bath house), we recently hired a full-time Facilities Supervisor, Keith Raymond, who is working up at camp every day to repair existing structures as well as build new ones. We are excited about the progress Keith has made in the short time he has been with Pinemere, and look forward to showing all of you the enhancements in camp when you arrive this summer.

I am also excited to share the news that we have hired Bob Bailey as our Athletic Director during the summer. Bob is a year-round high school Athletic Director, and is already working with us to both upgrade our sports facilities as well as overhaul our sports programming and instruction. Bob is also working to enhance the clinics we have offered for the last two summers, by making more options available to our campers, and during both sessions. These clinics will be taught by professional coaches and will allow our campers to build their skill levels and learn more about the game. You can read more about Keith and Bob below.

For the first time, I traveled to Eastern Europe (Budapest and Prague) in February to interview and hire our support staff for the summer. The cities were absolutely gorgeous and these young adults are an amazing group of people. All are currently studying at university in a
variety of fields, and are excited to experience an American camp
environment. Please read more about each of them below and take the
time to introduce yourselves when you get to camp.

It is hard to believe that in less than three months, camp will already be underway! We are busy every day making preparations for the summer, interviewing and hiring staff, and doing everything we can to ensure the summer is a success. Our enrollment continues to grow, and we continue to receive new camper applications. You are definitely getting the good word about Pinemere out into our community. Keep up the good work - we are always happy to welcome new campers. In order to become a "greener" camp, we are excited that we are going to an almost exclusive online system for our forms. Current families will be hearing from us again in the next few days with information about how to log in to our website to complete all of our additional forms required by camp. This includes our medical form; feel free to make your appointments with your family doctor for your child's annual physical examination.

In a few short weeks, we will be celebrating Passover. Passover is a
time of renewal and reflection, and a sure sign that spring has finally arrived. Passover has always been my favorite holiday as everything always seems new and fresh. I use the time to reflect on the past and to take a big breath of the wonderful spring air (especially after the long winter we have had) and to get myself ready for an exciting summer. I wish you and your families a wonderful Passover holiday.

Think Camp!

Welcome Keith Raymond

Hello! My name is Keith Raymond, and I am the new addition to the Pinemere Camp family. I live in East Stroudsburg with my wife Lori and three sons, Zachary, 17, Justin, 16, and Alexander, 14. I have been in the design and build business for 23 years. I will be heading up the maintenance department as the Facilities Supervisor. I will be at the camp year round making many new improvements. These improvements will make the summer even more enjoyable than it already is! I am very excited to be here, and to work with such a great team of people!

Welcome Bob Bailey

 bob

Bob Bailey is currently finishing his sixth year as the Athletic Director at Pocono Mountain East, an AAAA school with approximately 1,200 students participating in athletics grades 7-12. Prior to being named the Athletic Director at Pocono Mountain East, Bob was a social studies teacher, coach, and Assistant Athletic Director at Bangor Area from 1994-2005.  While at Bangor he also served as the Strength and Conditioning Coach and instituted a comprehensive strength and speed program for all athletes.

Bob is not a stranger to Pinemere. He was a day camper for several years in the late seventies. Bob's mother was the camp nurse and father was the dining hall supervisor during that time period.

Bob is a graduate of George Washington High School, Bloomsburg University, and East Stroudsburg University.  He has a Master's degree in secondary education. Bob lives in Swiftwater and is the proud father of Ryan, 11, and Avery, 8.

Bob will serve as Pinemere's Athletic Director this summer.

Enhanced clinics for Summer 2011

We are excited to once again offer specialized clinics at camp this summer! Clinics provide campers with a unique opportunity to focus exclusively on a single activity for 3 consecutive days, and improve their skills by learning from experts in our "Coaches-in-Residence" program.

This summer we have arranged for outside experts to be in camp on July 3-5, July 17-19, and July 31-Aug 2. Clinic offerings will include:

Softball
Theater
Wilderness Adventure
Woodworking

and more...

Please keep an eye on your inbox in the coming weeks for more information on signing up for clinics.

CIT Winter Weekend

cit1

On March 4-6, 26 of the 28 CITs of 2011 spent the weekend at chilly, rainy, Pinemere, for a weekend of leadership training and preparation for their CIT summer. We are thrilled that so many of them were able to attend, and the time we spent together at camp was a great kickoff to what is sure to be a fantastic and meaningful summer.

Cornerstone Fellows

We are thrilled that four of our returning staff members have been selected to participate in the Cornerstone Fellowship this May. Cornerstone, organized by the Foundation for Jewish Camp and made possible by the generosity of the Avi Chai Foundation, empowers third-year Jewish bunk counselors to view themselves as Jewish role models for both campers and younger counselors alike, by offering advanced professional training and imparting counselor skills, best practices in Jewish content programming, and team building exercises.

Hilary Cutler, Carla Graff, Ben Ringel, and Sam Silverberg were selected as Cornerstone Fellows for 2011, and Gabe Miner will be serving as their Cornerstone Liaison.

We look forward to all that our Cornerstone Fellows will add to camp this summer.
