The Most Important Things In Life Are Not Things!
By Dr. Robert Rohm
The Stanford Research Institute, Harvard University, and the Carnegie Foundation once spent over one million dollars and five years of research studying why some people succeed. After the study was concluded, it was determined that 15% of the reason a person is able to get a job, keep a job, and move ahead in that job, is determined by his or her technical skills and knowledge, regardless of the profession. The other 85% of the reason a person is able to get a job, keep that job, and move ahead in that job, is directly related to people skills. It soon becomes apparent that working with people and managing people, starting with ourselves, must be a high priority if we are going to be successful.
Even though I have heard that statistic quoted many times, I am still amazed at how much of business and life is primarily dictated by the task at hand, rather than the people skills that are necessary to complete the job. It seems to me that because the task often overrides the relationship, we tend to get our eyes on the wrong thing. We frequently focus on accomplishing the task in front of us rather than realizing the value found in relationships.

Reading, Writing and Arithmetic - Not Enough
By Zig Ziglar
Don't misunderstand - the need for those three skills is so obvious that in our ever-increasingly complex world they don't merit discussion. However, according to John Stinson, vice president of human resources at Trans-Canada PipeLines Limited, we've got to go much further than those basic skills. He points out that goal-setting, self-esteem, ethics, respecting diversity, integrity, persistence, teamwork, time management and problem-solving are all components that cannot be left out.
This will necessitate change in our thinking, and change always involves stress - but failure and inadequacy also involve considerable stress. John Stinson says, "If you don't have the ability to handle change and move on, you're going to be in trouble." The need for change increases as the world changes, and the educational needs of our children change accordingly. The parent must change by growing in skills and willingness to adapt.
This analogy will make the point: From 1972 until 1991, American exports of automobiles to Japan declined roughly 2%. German exports of automobiles to Japan in the same time period increased over 700%, and they worked under the same restraints that Americans did. Here's the difference: The Germans recognized that the Japanese drive on the left-hand side of the road, their steering wheels are on the right side of the car and their cars are smaller. Solution: Put the steering wheel on the right, make the cars smaller and the Japanese will buy them. When the American Jeep Cherokee, built to meet Japanese wishes, arrived in 1992, it was an immediate hit in Japan. Message: Prepare yourself to meet the needs of the marketplace and I can assure you that employers will be looking for you - particularly if you're really good at what you've prepared yourself to do. Think about it and I'll SEE YOU AT THE TOP!

Should You Train Through Knee Pain?
Dr. John H. Park, D.C.
You're lying on your left hip with the right leg up in air supporting your opponent as you attempt a jiujitsu sweep. Suddenly you hear a sudden pop and feel pain on the inside of your knee, but you decide to keep rolling. After class the knee feels stiff and a little sore, but you decide it's not a big deal and you should be fine for class tomorrow. Next week you roll and it feels a little better, but you hear and feel some clicking when you squat and begin to wonder if this is normal. Sound familiar?
Knee injuries are all too common in jiu-jitsu since the very nature of the grappling arts is to place your opponent in joint locks. If you have not had any knee injuries in your training, chances are you will at some point in time. The knee is very susceptible to sprains and strains, and repetitive traumas over time will lead to chronic conditions like chondromalacia and osteoarthritis. The most common injuries we have seen in our office are medial collateral ligament (MCL) sprains, meniscus injuries, patellar dislocations and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) sprains and tears.
So is it okay to train through knee pain?

As we make final preparation for the kids to head back to school, it's a good time to reflect on all teachers do for us....
WHAT TEACHERS MAKE
A poem by: Taylor Mali
The dinner guests were sitting around the table
discussing life. One man, a CEO, decided to explain
the problem with education. He argued:
"What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"
He reminded the other dinner guests that it's true
what they say about teachers: "Those who can...do.
Those who can't ... teach."
To corroborate, he said to another guest: "You're a
teacher, Susan," he said. "Be honest. What do you
make?"
Susan, who had a reputation of honesty and frankness,
replied, "You want to know what I make?"
I make kids work harder than they ever thought they
could.
I can make a C+ feel like a Congressional Medalof Honor and an A- feel like a slap in the face if the
student did not do his or her very best."
"I can make kids sit through 40 minutes of study hall
in absolute silence."
"I can make parents tremble in fear when I call home"
"You want to know what I make?"
"I make kids wonder."
"I make them question."
"I make them criticize."
"I make them apologize and mean it."
"I make them write."
"I make them read, read, read."
"I make them spell definitely beautiful, definitely
beautiful, and definitely beautiful over and over and
over again, until they will never misspell either one
of those words again."
"I make them show all their work in math and hide it
all on their final drafts in English."
"I make them understand that if you have the brains,
then follow your heart...and if someone ever tries to
judge you by what you make, you pay them no
attention!"
"You want to know what I make?"
"I make a difference."
"And you? What do you make?"
