Principles of a Martial Artist ..... |
 |
To Become a Martial Arts Master,
You must First Strive to Master Your Own
Emotions.
Controlling your anger before it controls you We all get
angry. It's a normal emotion. However, some of us
handle our anger better than others.
While one person might be a bit unhappy when
someone cuts him off in traffic, another is so angry
that he shouts and swears, and starts driving
aggressively himself.
How can the same event cause such different
reactions? And how can you make sure that your
reaction is the calm one, instead of the wild one?
Manage Your Anger Constructively.
The goal of anger management is not to eliminate
anger completely: that isn't possible, since it's a
natural human emotion.
Rather, the objective is to control and direct your
anger - so that it doesn't control you, or damage an
important relationship or situation.
In Anger Management: Channelling Anger into
Performance, we discuss steps for controlling anger
based on the ideas of Duke University's Redford
Williams, MD, who with his wife, authored the best-
selling book Anger Kills. There are three key elements
to these:
1. Understanding what causes your anger.
2. Reducing your angry reactions.
3. Controlling your anger when you experience it.

The Patient Parent
Patience,
We run out of it, lose it, wish we had more of it. It's a
quality that can make the difference between harmony
and discord in family life. It's also a choice. We can
learn to be more patient with our kids
Susan Spicer
This morning, over boiled eggs and bagels, I was
helping my eight-year-old daughter review her spelling
words - the ones we worked on last night. When she
made the same mistake three times in a row, I found
myself saying, "Annie, think! Sound out the word! A-S-
T-R-O-N-A-U-T." Her eyes welled up and she looked
panicked and desperate. I didn't intend to spoil her
breakfast or her confidence, but I did.
Why? Overworked and overtired, I lost
my patience - easy to lose and hard to find more of,
yet so important when it comes to dealing with kids.
You told us so yourselves in a 1999 study by York
University psychologists Harvey Mandel and Harold
Minden for Today's Parent. Patience topped the list of
skills you thought you needed as a parent. Likewise,
impatience was the number-one attitude you didn't
want to pass on to your kids.

HYDRATION: Summer is here - - - Don't
forget the water!!
Introduction: Water is our essence, our very
lifeblood, the most important nutrient in our body. It
makes up 70 percent of our muscles and 75 percent
of our brains; oxygen is the only thing the body craves
more than water. Yet every time we exhale, we lose it,
as much as two cups a day. Water evaporates
invisibly
from the surface of our skin too, an additional two
cups
a day; and each time we urinate, we lose even more-
probably as much as 2 pints in a 24-hour period.
During the course of a regular day, a healthy adult can
lose eight to ten cups of water, and that is before
working out at the gym.
When we fail to replenish the losses, we set up a
physiological chain reaction. Reading a "water
shortage" (dehydration) message, hormones tell the
kidneys to conserve water by urinating less; the urine
passed is amber-colored (healthy water intake
produces light-tinted urine). At a 3 percent loss of body
weight, muscular endurance diminishes; at 4 percent,
dizziness occurs, and physical labor capacity drops
by as much as 30 percent; at 5 percent, mental
concentration is reduced, drowsiness, impatience
and headaches occur; at 6 percent, the heart rate
increases and the body's temperature regulation
system starts to fail; at 7 percent, there is a good
chance of collapse.
