PRINTED MATTER  HOMENS DA NAO

Giacomo Nunez
From a very young age, I have known that I was a "Livornese", yet I have only been to Livorno just a few years ago. From the window of my room in the Hotel Gran Duca, I could see the old harbor, the Darsena Vecchia. It was there where Rodrigo Cardoso, my likely maternal ancestor, arrived in 1614 from Egypt with his ship, the N.S. della Bonaventura. At the same period, the galleon of Nathan Nunes was trading between Livorno and Tunis.

RESEARCH  THE DEPARTURE OF DUARTE DE PAZ FROM ROME IN THE LIGHT OF DOCUMENTS FROM THE VATICAN SECRET ARCHIVES

James Nelson Novoa

Since the nineteenth century Portuguese historian Alexandre Herculano (1810-1877) called attention to the figure of Duarte de Paz, he has been an almost legendary figure in Portuguese New Christian historiography. He has been alternatively considered by scholars as a conniving scoundrel 1 and looked upon favorably as leader in the New Christian struggle against the establishment of the Inquisition in Portugal. 2 It is not our intention to enter into the debate, but rather to contribute to the knowledge of a little known period in his life, namely that of his departure from Rome and his subsequent movements, availing ourselves of drafts of papal briefs held by the Vatican Secret Archive. RESEARCH  LIVORNESE TRACES IN AMERICAN JEWISH HISTORY: SABATO MORAIS AND ELIA BENAMOZEGH

Arthur Kiron, University of Pennsylvania, Sedici Autori per Elia Benamozegh. Ed. Alessandro Guetta

Among Sabato Morais' personal papers, which are mainly housed at the Center for Judaic Studies Library at the University of Pennsylvania, there exists a printed prospectus titled "Manifesto". On the top of the first page, in Morais' hand, appears the date "June 1876".

The announcement, written in Italian, proposes a new work of theology for publication, aiming to serve not only a pedagogic purpose but also to stimulate, it is hoped, a new ecumenical rapport about the underlying unity of all religions, as based upon Judaism. The prospectus was issued by the Livornese rabbi Elia Benamozegh. According to the Manifesto, the forthcoming book will bear the Italian title: Israele e l'Umanita. Printed beneath the announcement appears an excerpt from a letter written by Giuseppe Mazzini, the prophetic spirit of Italian unification, in support of the religious principle found in "Israel and Humanity."
