Mustangs Heat Up August Competition
Final Summer Competitions in Wyoming and Nevada

Wyoming State FairThe final competitions prior to the September Extreme Mustang Makeover are set for mid-August and fans of the wild horse will not want to miss the sensation that has captured the nation like no other.

Already drawing thousands to venues in Wisconsin and California, the Mustang Challenge will take center stage August 15 and 16 during the Wyoming State Fair and Rodeo in Douglas. The Wyoming Mustang Challenge offers $11,000 in prize money to 25 of the Rocky Mountain region's top horsemen and women as they show off the skills they've taught their wild American mustangs in the past 90 days.

The Top 10 Finals will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday August 16 and you'll be touched by the relationships developed by these trainers with their mustangs and the amazing talents of these American icons after only 90 days training, including some working on cattle and with a variety of obstacles.

yearling FreedomIf the bright lights of the biggest little city on earth are an attraction, then be the first to witness the debut of the Extreme Mustang Makeover's new yearling competition, Mission: 007, during the Wild Horse and Burro Expo in Reno, Nevada, August 15-16, as well. Named for the foaling year of the mustang yearlings, the $5,000 Mission: 007 features 55 formerly wild geldings and fillies being shown by 45 trainers from seven states.

Open to youth, amateur and professional competitors ages nine and older, this event will showcase the first opportunity for youth age 18 and under to interact with and train a wild horse.

Adoption for the yearlings are by silent bid and handlers will be available to prospective adopters throughout the competition to answer questions. Furthermore, BLM personnel will be on hand to quickly process adoption applications at both events, as well as provide information regarding the adoption of mustangs. For more information on the adoption of Mustangs, call 1-866-4MUSTANGS or go to wildhorseandburro.blm.gov.
Time to TIP Off!
Earn thousands in extra income through incentive program

TIP Logo We know times are tough, but here's a TIP on a good way to make some extra income with the talents you already have: The MHF Trainer Incentive Program!

Trainers receive limited compensation over a 90-day period for the care and training of one to four Mustangs and cash incentives when the Mustang is adopted. For example, if  the incentive Mustang is trained and adopted in 30 days or less, the trainer will receive $5 per day for care and $600 in bonus incentive pay. For 31-60 days, the per day fee is $4 and bonus pay is $500, while the per day fee is $3 for 61-90 days and bonus pay is $400. Horses not adopted in 91 days are returned to the BLM, with the trainer receiving $2 per day and no bonus pay. Mustangs can be returned within 15 days if it becomes apparent that it is un-adoptable.

Trainers can also be creative in the marketing of the mustangs by offering training packages and pricing to potential adopters based on the training and skills the horse displays.

Help Us Spread the Good News!

trade showRecently, the BLM announced that it may exercise its authority to euthanize an over-populated wild horse herd. As a Mustang fan, this news most likely caught your attention and it seems to only add to the continuing flow of bad news about the horse industry.

But here's the GOOD NEWS! The Mustang Heritage Foundation through its Extreme Mustang Makeover, Mustang Challenge and Trainer Incentive Program will place nearly 1,000 horses for adoption by the end of this year.

Don't you think that's news worth sharing?

Well, you can and it's easier than you might think.

If you'd like to see the good news of the Mustang Heritage Foundation and its work being shared in your area newspapers and on television stations, you actually have more influence because you are a local viewer and reader. Just follow these simple steps:
  1. Go to the trainer's listing on the EMM web site (check both the EMM and Yearling Programs) and see who is in your area;
  2. Go to this listing of newspapers and television station web sites and find all who serve your viewing and circulation area or go to the sites of stations you watch and newspapers/magazines you read;
  3. Find the CONTACT US button on the site; usually at the very bottom of the page or under the About Us link;
  4. Write a short note expressing your interest in seeing the topic covered locally. Be sure to include your name and phone number.
Not a great writer? That's okay. Here's an idea for your note, but personalize as much as you can. Be sure and remove parentheses with the correct term for the media you are writing to.

Dear Editor:

As an interested viewer (or reader), I am writing to make you aware of an issue of national concern that is being addressed in a pro-active and creative way. I believe your viewers (readers) will agree. You may have read that the Bureau of Land Management is considering the euthanasia of wild horses as a herd management tool. However there are alternatives and horse trainers in our area will have 100 days to train a wild Nevada mustang for the Extreme Mustang Makeover to take place September 18-21 in Fort Worth, Texas. They are among more than 300 trainers in 38 states involved in the program and are competing for a purse of $70,000. All horses in the competition will be placed for adoption. Through this and other similar programs, nearly 1,000 horses will find homes. I urge you to consider bringing exposure to this positive story. For more information, please check extrememustangmakeover.com or call 817.443.0686. Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

An Adoption Story
Samson Finds A Home and Hits the Trail

SamsonLike many trainers in the Mustang Challenge and Extreme Mustang Makeover programs, Shelley Simmons was reluctant to see her mustang Samson go. But a reality check was in order.

"As much as I wanted to buy Samson back, reality was I could not afford him.  It was not so much affording the purchase price, but I already had two horses and one was due to foal so I could not afford to keep another horse."

So, in steps Gerry Bourn of Rio Linda, California. She was looking for a retirement present to herself and after reading about Norca, Calif, mustang ambassador Hail Yeah, she came to the Western States Mustang Challenge looking for a gelding.

"At Horse Expo, I was there early each day, and watched the in-hand class and the riding class, and was very impressed by many of the horses," she said. "Samson was one of the larger horses (15 hands), a gelding, and throughout the events, had the appearance of being very calm with the whole process.  I thought he did quite well and I was kind of disappointed that he didn't make the finals, until I talked to his trainer, Shelley Simmons, who told me that he was marked down quite a bit on 'fitness' score because he was too fat. I was successful at the auction, within my price range, of which I was even more glad when my second choice went for $10,000."

Now Gerry and Samson are hitting the trails and loving every minute of it.

"Just this week we went out our first pack trip together with family and friends.  We had worked on hobbles and wearing the horse boots at home, and he was wonderful on the trail, confident about any place in the line up, high lined great, crossed all creeks and rivers, stepped over logs, and went up and down steep trails."

Yeah, but does she recommend it to others?

"Temperament is everything.  Their temperament and your patience and willingness to understand that a wild horse does not think of you the same way as a domestically raised one does.  Observe every day of the competition, talk to the trainer, and be specific with your questions."
