Paulus Orchards
Greetings!

This weekend the u-pick pumpkin patch will open.  The u-pick apples, corn maze, and wagon rides will also continue.

I'm excited to tell you that I have been making apple cider donuts and I will have freshly made donuts for sale this weekend.  My employees have really enjoyed my experimenting with the donut fryer!  For some reason they are wishing mistakes my way...must be because they want to keep eating the donuts!

Actually, I'm just kidding.  I have to tell you that I have such a great group of employees at the stand.  They keep me where I need to be.  Lucy, Kim, Marcie, and Nancy have all brought in wonderful food to share (this week's recipe comes from Kim).  They often remind me of everything I need to do (usually in a nice way!) and help me in hundreds of ways.  These are my full time people - I have numerous part time people too that are also very valuable.  Plus Dan would work 24 hours a day if it wasn't for the excellent help of Gary and Frank.  We are lucky and I just wanted to "tell the world" how great they are!  You might not see all of these people, but they are helping us to make your visit to the farm a good one!  :)
Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Every year there is a Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest at the Dillsburg Farmer's Fair.  We sponsor this event by donating the prize money.  You can help the fair by entering the contest!  First place is $125 and the chance to compete at the State Farm Show in January.  Second place is $75 and third place is $50.
You must be a PA resident to enter, and you may only enter one pie.  To enter, you need to pick up a registration form (available at the farm) and send it in to the fair by October 10th.
Happy cooking!!
U-Pick and Corn Maze
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
U-Pick Pumpkins begins this Saturday and will continue on weekends until the end of October.

U-Pick Apples for this weekend will be Cortland, Golden Delicious, and Red Delicious.  Hours are Saturday 9-5 and Sunday 11-5.   Golden and Red Delicious are sweet apples and Cortland is moderately tart.

Just a reminder, that September is yellow jacket month.  I strongly encourage you to not eat apples while picking.  It attracts the yellow jackets almost immediately.

The Corn Maze is also open this weekend.  It's "bee" themed and you'll find little bits of bee trivia throughout the maze.

Flashlight mazes will be every Friday evening in October starting October 2nd (only one more week).  Everyone must have a flashlight to enter.  Admission for the flashlight maze will begin at 6:30.  Last entrance will be at 8:30.
In the Stand...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
New apples in the stand are Jonagold, Nittany, and Golden Delicious.  Don't forget to get some cider too!
Stop by the farm for your fall decorating needs.  We have Indian Corn, Gourds, Pumpkins, Straw Bales, and Corn Shocks.
New Class
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Monday, October 19th, you can come and learn how to make applesauce.  It will be from 6-8 pm.  The cost is $8, which will cover all supplies.  We'll be using the saucemasters to make the sauce.  Many people have thought about buying one but they weren't sure if they wanted to make the investment.  Well, now you can come and give it a try and make a mess in my kitchen instead of your own!  Call the farm to register (432-2544).  Class size is limited to 10 people.  There are just a couple of spaces left.
Recipe of the Week
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This week's recipe is for apple butter.  The recipe comes from Kim Young, who works for us.  She brought us some last week so I can testify that this is a good recipe!  It's definitely takes some time - but it's well worth the wait.  Thank you Kim!
Have a Great Week!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
