Paulus Orchards
Greetings!

On Saturday and Sunday we will have a silent auction to raise money for the American Cancer Society.  One hundred percent of the money raised will go to the Cancer Society.  There is a nice variety of items so I hope that you can come out and place a bid.  We will phone the winner of each item, so you do not need to be present to win.

It's not too late to bring in a donation for the auction.  We will be open until 7pm today (Friday).  If that doesn't work, you can bring the item on Saturday.  Every bit helps!  Donations can be anything - a toy, books, decorative items, gift cards, a basket of goodies...

As a thank you from us, we will give you a certificate good for two free corn maze admissions that you can use any weekend.

A huge Thank You to everyone who already contributed!!
U-Pick and Corn Maze
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
U-Pick Apples continues this weekend.  Hours are Saturday 9-5 and Sunday 11-5.  This weekend you can pick Gala, Cortland, and Jonathan.  Gala are a sweet apple and Cortland and Jonathan are moderately tart.
I know children love to eat an apple as they are picking (and some of us adults as well), but I strongly encourage you to not snack on apples while picking.  At least not in September.  The yellow jackets will find you.  We've had a couple of people who were eating apples get stung.  Once there is a frost, it gets much better, but for now - please be careful.  I don't want to scare you away - if you're not eating them you should be just fine!
The Corn Maze also continues this weekend.  It's "bee" themed and you'll find little bits of bee trivia throughout the maze.  I thought that would make the maze more interesting and fun.  I hope you like it.  I hope to theme it each year and make it more educational.
In the Stand...
Autumn Glo Peaches are in, and they are the last peaches of the 2009 season!  This is your last chance to enjoy them.  We'll probably have them for about a week (it's hard to say exactly how long).  You won't want to wait much longer!
As peach season nears it's end, apple season begins! McIntosh, Cortland, and Jonathan are all new this week which makes 7 different varieties to choose from.
CIDER is now available!  You can grab a pint to drink right away, or grab a gallon to share with your family.  Hot cider is one of my favorite drinks.  We'll be sampling that later in the year.  Sadly September is the worst month for yellow jackets and they LOVE cider too!  But take my word for it, it's a delicious drink and we have all of the supplies you need to make it (cider, tea balls, and cider spices).
Of course there's lots of other delicious fruits and veggies.  New this week are Acorn Squash, Spaghetti Squash, and Butternut Squash.
Yummy Baked Goods - Breads, Cookies, Pies.
You can also get all of your canning supplies, including pressure cookers (NEW), at the orchard.
New Class
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The pictures from our first canning class are posted on our facebook page.  You can see them at www.facebook.com/PaulusOrchards

We are having another canning class next week.  It is currently full but our next class which will be in October on making applesauce still has openings.

On Monday, October 19th, you can come and learn how to make applesauce.  It will be from 6-8 pm and the cost will be $8, which will cover all supplies.  We'll be using the saucemasters to make the sauce.  Many people have thought about buying one but they weren't sure if they wanted to make the investment.  Well, now you can come and give it a try and make a mess in my kitchen instead of your own!  Call the farm to register (432-2544).  Class size is limited to 10 people.  If there is a strong interest I will add another class.
Recipe of the Week
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So here's my funny story of the week.  On our facebook page Wesley Shoemaker made a post about a great peach pie that he made with our peaches AND posted a picture of the pie!  So, of course, I wrote back that I was too busy at the farm to cook much right now and he could bring me a slice.  It was just a joke, but he actually brought me a piece!  So I can testify that it was delicious.  He was kind enough to share his recipe with all of us.  So enjoy his recipe for Peach Pie
This will be the last peach recipe of the season.  Thanks Wesley!
