Greetings!
I'm a little late on my newsletter this week! We had a wonderful canning class at the farm last night (taught by Nina Redding from Penn State) and I guess by the time I got home I was just too tired to start typing. So I'm doing it now...
I'm working on posting pictures of the class - but with dial up it takes a REALLY long time. I can hardly stand how long it takes me to work on-line. But I have been told that we will join the rest of the world and have high speed by early November. I'm counting the days... Anyhow, please check our web site, www.paulusorchards.com, to see a link to the photos. It's not there right now, but I should have the link there by Saturday!
This will be the last week of staying open to 9 pm. After Labor Day weekend we will close at 7 pm.
So for this coming week:
Sunday: 11 am to 5 pm
Monday, Aug. 31 to Sat. Sept. 5: 9 am to 9 pm
Sunday, Sept. 6: 11 am to 5 pm
Monday, Labor Day, 9 am to 5 pm (Closing early on Labor Day)
Tuesday, Sept. 7 to Saturday, Sept. 12: 9 am to 7 pm |

In the Stand...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ New this week are Gala apples and Stanley Prune Plums.
You can still get your peaches. Right now we have Loring and after that we have 2 other later varieties. We usually have peaches until mid September which will be here before you know it so get them soon!
You can also get all of your canning supplies, including pressure cookers (NEW), at the orchard.
Click here for a complete list of what produce is available in the stand. |
We're looking for FUN people...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We're now hiring weekend help for the kitchen, farm stand, corn maze, and u-pick for now through the end of October.
Instead of joining the gym, let us pay you to be outdoors and walk the maze! (This is probably my favorite thing to do, but with so much going on I'm usually needed elsewhere and could use your help.)
Or if you're looking for something less active, selling maze tickets and u-pick apples is for you.
Moms, Dads, Retired Folks, College Students - we have something fun for everyone. Click here to get an application and then bring it in. I'm looking forward to seeing you! |
It's almost CORN MAZE TIME and U-PICK time!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Only 8 days until the maze and u-pick apples are open! Opening day is Saturday, September 5th. The maze and u-pick will be open every Saturday in September and October from 9 am to 5 pm and every Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm.
Also open on Labor Day and Columbus Day from 9 to 5.
We LOVE teachers. Thanks for doing so much for our communitie's children! Every year we give FREE admission to teachers to the corn maze on opening weekend. So if you're a teacher, grab your ID and come out anytime during Labor Day weekend to give the maze a try. It's "bee" themed this year! Check out the aerial photos. |
Cancer Society Fundraiser
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please consider making a donation for our silent auction to benefit the American Cancer Society. We are really in need of items for the auction - can be gift items, gift cards, children's items - anything. The auction will be held on Saturday, September 12th, and Sunday, September 13th. We had a wonderful variety of items last year and I hope to have another great offering this year.
One hundred percent of the money will go to the American Cancer Society.
Everyone who makes a contribution to the auction will receive two free corn maze admissions as our way of saying THANK YOU for your help!
We've lost two employees who were also great friends over the past few years to cancer and I'm sure you know someone who has fought or is fighting cancer as well. Let's all come together to support the research efforts of the Cancer Society. |
Recipe of the Week
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This week's recipe is for Corn Pie. The recipe comes from Andy Derr's grandmother and has been passed down to him. Andy is a senior at Messiah College and has been working for us in the evenings in the kitchen. We gave the pie a try and it was very good. Andy tells me that it should be served with warm milk poured on top. I hope you like it! | |
