Paulus Orchards
Greetings!

First of all, I am sorry that I did not get an e-mail newsletter out last week.  I appreciate how many of you noticed!  :)  We received a number of phone calls to see if everything was O.K.  Yes, indeed, we are all doing well.  I did have a pretty sick child last week and I guess with her being sick and also the tremendous down pour of rain and all of the damage that went along with that just wiped me out.  But now I'm back!

If you've been waiting for those delicious Red Haven Peaches, the wait is over.  We have lots of them.  Sometimes we are asked if we have soft, ready-to-eat peaches.  Unfortunately, the answer is no.  You will want to plan ahead with peaches and give them 3 or 4 days to soften.  A perfect peach - soft, juicy, and ready to eat is actually more fragile than an egg.  They would be bruised in a basket or box and we want to supply you with the best quality fruits that we can so the peaches are picked a little harder to allow them to get to your home in perfect condition.  Once home, spread them out on your counter or place them in a brown bag to soften.  The wait will be worth it!

Another very common question is... Do you have seconds?  Seconds are second quality.  They are downgraded for one of three reasons.  One: Too small.  Two: Bruised because they got softer.  Three: Split-pit.  Seconds will not keep as well as the first quality.  We do not have seconds very often and I don't take orders for them because I wouldn't want to promise you something and then not have it.  But, over the last three days we have sorted many, many peaches for a number of wholesale orders so we do have seconds at the stand right now.  If you want a box, you may call the farm at 432-2544 and we will hold it for you.  (We open at 9 am.) We do not hold seconds for more than one day, so if you call please be able to pick up your peaches by 9 pm.

York County Farmstand Tour
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Saturday, August 8th, the York County Agriculture Business Council is sponsoring a farmstand tour in York County.  If you visit three of the fourteen participating farmstands you can go to one of two final locations to receive free peaches and ice cream.  The hours are 10 am to 3 pm.  This should be a really fun thing to do with your friends or family!
The final locations (this is where you get the free peaches and ice cream) are the York County 4-H Center located at 771 Stoverstown Road in York (just off Rt 116 West of York) or the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education located at 4945 Horn Road in York (just north of the Hellam exit of Rt 30).  There will be a number of fun activities and bands at the final locations.
For more information you can call 717-246-3578 or visit www.hornfarmcenter.org.
We are one of the fourteen farms participating so we hope you'll stop by and visit us!  You can pick up your "passport" at any of the farms.  Each farm has a stamp to stamp the back.  Get 3 or more stamps and then head to one of the above locations.
We have flyers at the farm or you can print the flyer here.  Feel free to pick one up the next time you're here!
U-Pick Blueberries
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
U-Pick blueberries continues!  There are still lots of yummy berries waiting to be picked so u-pick will extend into the first week of August, possibly longer but I'll have to let you know.  So come out this Saturday or next Tuesday or Thursday and gather up some VERY healthy berries!  The hours are 9 am to 1 pm.  Follow the gravel drive and come to the red shed to pick up a bucket and then have lots of fun picking.  It's an inexpensive way to have lots of fun with the kids or grandkids!
Classes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I had hoped to have a complete schedule of classes by now - but unfortunately we are still working on it.
I can tell you that we will have a wonderful lady from Penn State come and teach a canning class on Thursday, August 27th, in the evening.  We will can peaches and green beans, which will show us how to use a hot water bath as well as a pressure cooker for canning.  The cost will be approximately $10/person which will include supplies and hand-outs.  I need to finalize the information with her to determine the maximum number of participants.  I will hopefully be able to start taking reservations next week.  If you know for sure that you want to participate, please e-mail me or call the stand at 432-2544.
Applesauce classes will be in September and we're working on other classes as well.
Have a Great Week!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
